Episode 5.02: Not Cancer EYE EYE DOCTOR!

1. I love the detective and I think he is awesome, especially when he busts out the random psychology. And the fact that he is basically, in a lot of ways, House -- he tells the truth 'cause his employees aren't his friends. "WE WANT ICE CREAM!" "NOT UNTIL YOU LEARN TO READ!" Love him.

2. It's always fun to see what other, unrelated doctors think of House -- it's impossible to think there's anyone in the hospital who isn't aware of him, given his theatrics and reputation, but there seems to be a general mentality of benign annoyance. House is the demented terrier puppy of the hospital, the one who chews up your shoes and you should be mad but really you didn't like those shoes anyway and he did bite the punk-ass neighbour kid who richly deserved it, so you're going to slip him some bacon from your plate at breakfast tomorrow.

3. That reveal at the end was interesting. They played it up a trifle too much -- her realisation should have come without him having to say quite so much, and without her having to ask if the world will be "beautiful" -- but it was a great concept nonetheless.

3a. Kutner's just all kinds of seat-of-your-pants, isn't he?

Episode 5.03: Adverse Events Bezoar or Be Square!

4. I found this episode kind of impenetrable, though this could be because I was not paying entirely full attention. It just seemed like it was really heavy on the medical techspeak. Though it wasn't light on personal character arcs, so I guess that's okay. Also, the solve was a BEZOAR. HOW GREAT IS THAT.

5. I love the dirt the detective dug up on the Numbers. Thirteen's not thrifty and Taub's wife is socking away money, but poor little Kutner's darkest secret is that he's in the Guinness Book of World Records for crawling. Which he didn't do to get girls! (Begging the question of why he DID do it.)

6. In general I've really enjoyed the PI arc, though it seems to have drawn to a close after this episode. The PI was kind of an example of Doing It Right -- if this were fandom he would be an OC, rather than a Mary Sue. It's that mix of charm and humanity that does it, I think, and the way he always forwards the plot. I've been trying to define for a long time what differentiates an OC from a Mary Sue, because they have a lot of the same qualities, but I think one of the big ones is that every conversation with House is about House, not about the PI. He gets his own subplot, the stalking-Cuddy arc, but it's a minor point against the majority of the episode. Even when he gets to jam with House, the story never serves him, he always serves the story. I don't know what you'd call that when the source material isn't fanfic but canon -- supporting temporary character, or something. Anyway, job well done there.

3a. HOUSE WAS A CHEERLEADER BAHAHAHAHA AND HE DID DO IT FOR A GIRL. Classic. Beautiful. I may cry.

Episode 5.04: Birthmarks House Has Two Daddies

7. A lot of people have said this was an amazing episode, comparing it to Three Stories for top rank in the House pantheon. I have to say I can't really concur. It's a good episode, but it's not great -- it's definitely not Three Stories, whose beauty was in its simplicity and gutpunch. Birthmarks is messy, disorganised, and mean. Which is appropriate to its subject matter, that's not a criticism. It's good storytelling. It's just not great, not to my view, and I think the error there comes because we get so much backstory all in a whack, which feels like Three Stories.

8. Man, House's mother is an asshole. I was really torn about the funeral -- yes, he should go so that he can provide support for her, if needed, but that flew out the window the minute she insisted on him giving the eulogy and preached to him about 'the war' being over. Making him take part was a selfish prick thing to do, and the only possible motivation she could have had for doing it was to make them look Happy Families in front of Dad House's corps buddies. I don't buy that she wants him to get closure, and even if she does it's a fallacy; you don't stop being traumatised and fucked up just because your abuser died. I'm not one for Emo!Weepy!House, I think we all know that, but I also do believe his father was abusive in a borderline mentally-ill capacity. If I were House I wouldn't have wanted to go either.

9. House and Wilson are adorable, and I love that House picked Wilson because Wilson wasn't boring. I suppose I always sort of assumed that Wilson picked House for that reason.

3a. Cue the millions of House fanfics about him searching out his BioDad and weeping in his arms or whatnot. God I'm so glad I don't read fanfic in most fandoms I'm in.

What's that, MOAR FANDOM? Okay!

I was having a discussion with [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 last night about how, when you are reading a bad fanfic, sometimes after a really tremendous grammar/spelling/characterisation error you just want to stand there and JAZZHANDS it. And thus I was challenged to make icons, which you are free to use whenever you feel the need to Jazzhands up your life a little.

And my personal favourite....SARCAZZHANDS.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] demotu did a quiz, and I took it, and the results were....surprising.

Which Torchwood Character Are You?
Your Result: Captain Jack Harkness

You most resemble the team's outrageous, mysterious leader. Cheeky, sexy, and charming, people are drawn to your charisma, but at the same time you tend to keep your relationships superficial. You aren't afraid of your emotions and tend to just let them out, but you are afraid of truly connecting with those around you.
