I am feeling better after some TV and orange juice. And a steady IV drip of House MD. I'm all caught up now!
Episode 5.05:Lucky Thirteen There Are A Lot Of Skinny Girls With Heroin Chic Eye Makeup In This Episode
1. YAY P.I. AWESOME IS BACK. He is my favourite character that I will never see again after this episode. I also love how they keep doing shots of him to make him look like House -- playing the piano, throwing the ball, etc.
2. I am uncertain what I think about this very Sapphic plot. Not so much about Thirteen being bi in general, I'm all for more portrayal of normalised alternate sexualities on television, but I'm not sure if it's normalised here -- if House being a dick about it means it's normal, or if the fact that it's so prominently featured is just a lure for more viewers. Sex sells, though, so why shouldn't they use any kind of sex they want? I DO NOT KNOW, I am all kinds of postmodern but apparently I am not postmodern enough to assess this objectively.
3. Hands up if you started laughing your ass off at Wilson as soon as he said "She wants to go to law school". Because I KNOW I DID. And then I was fooled. So, so fooled.
3a. House's end-of-show reaction to Cuddy's Adoption News was great. Hugh Laurie, whatever else you say about him, can bust out the lightning-fast change of status like a mofo. It's not even that I like that House can still be stunned; I like that Laurie can sell that reaction as honest and in-character.
Episode 5.06:Joy Filmed In All New Dun-Vision!
4. There's been a theme this season, at least so far, of people visually rediscovering the world -- first the half-blind woman from Not Cancer, now the Harmons with their cured anhedonia. It's interesting, but I can't help but wonder what's going on behind the scenes to cause this, or if it's some kind of arc that's going to whack House in the back of the head in a few weeks.
5. Who is letting Cuddy practice medicine on the mother of her child? Also, WHO DIDN'T SEE THIS COMING, the girl taking back the kid? Seriously. Also also, man, Cuddy's heels look so painful.
6. HEY WHOA THERE HOUSE, kiss the emotional woman who just lost her adopted baby, even I am more socially adept than you, and I am not socially adept. To be fair, Cuddy was pissed off at him because she didn't seem to realise that House was prepping her for parenthood, but to be more fair, House is not so much an open book as a locked book hidden in a drawer inside a desk buried in concrete. So, y'know. It's just as well Cuddy's not getting a kid because the pair of them would raise the most twisted child ever.
3a. Wow, Wilson is polishing the fuck out of that apple. Is he entering it in some kind of competition?
5.07:The Itch Drawer, Partner
7. Wilson is an asshole. Telling Cuddy you have feelings for her when you don't is lame and bad. BAD WILSON. I forgive you because Cuddy saw through it and you probably knew she would, but seriously. Don't be House, you don't have the cojones.
8. I'm not sure I have Three Things to say about this episode. I found the patient excruciatingly boring, ditto Cameron.
9. On the other hand, House's nightmare about EXPLODING FLAT was pretty awesome.
3a. CHASE HAS THE CRAZY EYES. I noticed it in that horrifying engagement photo the actors released (everyone did -- beware popups on that page), and now I can't unsee it.
Hey, by the way, where did Downward Spiralling Thirteen go? She has seemed to me to be Pretty Ordinary Thirteen for the last two episodes.
Episode 5.08:Emancipation I Never Did Figure Out What POTW Is Sick With
10. Why is Foreman so angry? He's smoldering. I'd get it if he was that way AFTER House told him no, but he was pre-angry.
11. Taub, wtf, lying about having Huntingtons. THAT WAS RANDOM. He couldn't have lied about being raped, as long as he was lying?
12. You know given the amount of grief Wilson is giving him and the sheer level of awkward between him and Cuddy, House might as well be dating her, because at least then he'd presumably be getting laid as well. I mean, he's basically skipped the fun parts of the relationship and gone straight to the part about two months before the divorce.
3a. WHY IS FOREMAN SO ANGRY?
Episode 5.09:Last Resort I Didn't Say Guns Blazing, I Said Guns Waving
14. While I know it makes for bad TV, would it not be more in character for House to say, "If you shoot everyone here you will be shot and either killed or apprehended, where you will be thrown in jail and get sub-standard medical treatment. So the whole hostage thing, not really going to work out for you no matter what." I'm just saying.
15. Oooh, there's risky downward-spiralling Thirteen!
16. There was some nice mirroring going on in this episode, attrition on both sides -- hostages getting freed at the same time doctors were walking out. Not to mention House vs. Thirteen vs. This Week's Crazy Patient, all in a contest over who is a martyr. And nobody is quite sure whether you win if you get martyrdom or if you don't.
3a. I can't help the feeling that the entire episode was built around the payoff of Cuddy's desk drawer being upside down. It was bugging me all episode what House was DOING in there, and then at the end when she pulled it out, oh god, it was totally worth the forty minute wait. TOTALLY WORTH IT.
Episode 5.10:Let Them Eat Cake I Can't Think Of A Good Pun Involving The Word Bidet
17. "Backseat differentialating" made me ROFL. I know a lot of people are all up in arms about it but the new House/Cuddy dynamic? IS AWESOME. Neurotic and insecure and awesome and you can't convince me otherwise. (The show might; most television dramas have a history of taking anything awesome and surgically removing what made it that way.) I will say that while it is hilarious how Wilson keeps berating House to ask Cuddy out, there's no reason he shouldn't be berating Cuddy to ask House out. And yet he isn't. Which actually is made of fail. Jesus, I think I'm already taking the awesome away myself. This is depressing.
18. Did...did Wilson just give Cuddy relationship advice regarding House while correcting her swatch colour selection? I think he did. I think this basically just proves that House and Wilson have been together for years, and Wilson's various marriages were their way of retaining their long term relationship without killing each other, and now House is cashing in his I Get To Fuck Around points for his fling with Cuddy. In short: Wilson is gay, gay for House, and that is why his marriages failed. Except for Amber, her dying a horrible lingering death from bus accident plus cold medication isn't directly blameable on Wilson being gay for House. Although he is. Gay. Very gay. For House.
19. I find Thirteen less annoying now that she is coping badly with her own problems instead of coping badly with other peoples'. She's less of a drama queen this way.
3a. BACKSEAT DIFFERENTIALATING!
Episode 5.11:Joy To The World A Baby Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas
20. Why is it always teenage girls and pregnancy? Not just on House, but in general -- I am willing to bet if you totted up all the diseases that teenage girls have had in medical dramas over the past decade, a significant percentage if not a majority would be Secret Pregnancies. It's getting a little worn, as a plot. Teenage girls can get sick from other stuff too, you know.
21. As soon as Kutner said, "I wasn't bullied in school" I called that he'd been a bully. VALIDATED!
22. OH HAI THERE u can has moral dilemma, Dr. Foreman, as technically Dr. Thirteen is your patient. Also, five bucks says House announces their relationship in the first ten minutes of his screentime next episode.
3a. I don't really get House's motivation for the whole gift thing, but I do think it's awesome that Wilson got him Bell's "On Surgery" because Bell was the model for Sherlock Holmes. :D
I went looking for the promo for 5.12 and found out that there's no more House till January, which is a bummer. I also came across a promo for a film called House, some kind of horror flick, but I think House MD The Movie would be excellent. I'm thinking some kind of Outbreak scenario, compounded by a natural disaster. There would be at least one motorcycle chase scene, and House would self-deprecatingly refer to himself as "Gregory House. Action hero." Stephen Fry would guest star. I'll get right on writing it.
