I am home, and would have posted sooner if I weren't on the good drugs and trying to keep my parents from FREAKING OUT, jesus, calm the fuck down. I'm going to slip them some of Lortab they gave me.

For those of you who are reading on a mirror, I phone-posted again from Urgent Care that my leg was in fact broken. Hairline fracture of the tibia. I get a bitchin' black boot and a pair of crutches.

THIS IS SUCH BULLSHIT, I hate my ankles right now.

I've called work and extended my time off through Thursday. I've found a leg doctor in Chicago who I'm going to be seeing next Monday. Now all I need to do is bite the bullet and pay the $300 or so that it's going to cost to change my ticket from tomorrow to anytime-before-Monday.

This is going to make getting to and from work...problematic. The El isn't very forgiving on the handicapped.

*sad face*

I wish I could offer some type of shared pain story, but I have cement ankles. Despite the tripping, high heels, and ocasional bang against stone walls, I've never even twisted my ankle.

*offers chocalote or ficlet*

trying to keep my parents from FREAKING OUT

OMG, I know, right. Parents just don't have an 'off' button. I injured my knee playing football two months ago (pretty badly, tbf) and for ages every time I called home they'd be like OMGAREYOUOKAY?! and then when I went home they were all, OMG DON'T DO ANYTHING. And I was all O_O.
I guess we'd all be miffed if they stopped freaking out.

At least it's hairline, so it's not displaced. Should mean it heals up pretty quickly, as breaks go. Sucks though, man. Sorry to hear it.

Will we get pictures of the boot and crutches? I have the most awesome body cast from when I crushed my spine up as a teenager - kick ass casts are the answer to the broken bone moping, or at least thirteen year old me thought so :)

On the other hand, time to ornament the black boot. Might be interesting to see what you can do with some buckles and black electrical tape. As for transportation, got anybody at work who'd be willing to carpool for gas money?

Could you prevail on R for transportation help? Do a barter kind of thing maybe - you'll make him meatloaf (or spaghetti, or whatever) a couple times a week in exchange for rides. Although I'm guessing with the hours he keeps, the early mornings might be problematic.

Date: 2009-05-11 11:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com
The issue is that R would totally do it, except that he's incredibly unreliable. He'd be happy to drive me to work if he's awake, but the odds of him being awake are fifty-fifty. :/ I am considering moving in with him for a week, though, because at least that way if I fell in the shower or something, someone would know....

Oh my God, I am so sorry. I broke my foot recently (in Dresden, go me) and while it's almost healed now, getting around on the airport and metro and buses and such was a nightmare of epic proportions. I'd call ahead to the airport and ask for a wheelchair when you fly, since airports are very much not crutches-friendly, and the wheelchair guys are very nice.

It's sounds to me that you officially have noodle-y ankles. And yes that's the technical term developed by my family after also being cursed with the noodle-y ankles (or lack of arch support in our feet which in turn causes those of us who are physically active to roll/sprain/fuck up our ankles monthly...hence the noodle-y term).

This is problematic. R really seemed more the morphine-gigglies sort. But I'm sure we can make it work...

(Anonymous already got the sympathy and hope-you-get-well-soon bit in for me and my fellow lurkers, so I feel justified in referring back to my fangrrrl roots and very barely refraining from starting in on the complex Ellis/Anderson theories that are well underway in your baby fandom.)

Gah -- I sprained my ankle almost a year back, and I still remember it with a shudder. I got elastic-bandaged and walking-caned for about a week. and had to clutch walls and hop on one foot to get to places. :(

I'm seconding the person who said balance exercises -- my {post sprain} physiotherapist gave me some, and you wouldn't believe the difference {I tend to drag my feet; I didn't do it as much after a week of the exercises}.

Ah man, Sam. That bites. On the bright side, you get to visit with family longer! :)

Have you broken it before? I've heard that previous breaks weaken the bone and make it easier to break.

HA! We had a commercial playing here in Ontario about a month ago, where the entire city is wrapped in bubble wrap, including the people. (I think it was a car commercial? Random) Do we need to do this to you and Chicago/anywhere else you visit?

Potential transit advice: though it's slower, buses are much more friendly. The 151 goes from Sheridan (which i think is your stop) to downtown. Also, i don't know how close you are to Clark or Broadway, but those do too. And i don't know how close you are to Addison, but that does have an elevator, which Sheridan does not.

Date: 2009-05-12 12:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com
Oh god, the 151 is such a wandering bitch, though. I've been on it, it takes FOREVER to get anywhere. I might take the 80 to Lake Shore and take the 146 south.

I may end up taking a cab for about a week...
