Oh, I don't think there's anything here that requires knowledge of the old series. I knew Cybermen showed up in the old Who, and I'd imagine anyone who reads fanfic is aware of that. It was just this line:

eyes dropping like the good nineteenth-century girl she was raised as before she chose to step out of the time machine, to stay in the 20th century

that clued me in that Victoria was a former companion of the Doctor, and I was curious. Otherwise, I would have thought that she was an OC, and it works fine that way too.

Ah! Okay, good, I'm glad that worked :) Victoria was indeed a Companion, where she was mostly employed to scream loudly when necessary. :D
