So remember when the shoe repair place killed my boots?

I went boot shopping and found two pairs of boots I did not hate. I bought them in different sizes, because sizes vary between brands and I'm never quite sure what size I am. Anyway, I thought I'd try them on and keep whatever pair fit.

TURNS OUT THEY BOTH FIT.

But BossBoss, most of the admins, and one delivery guy who came in while I was trying them on all said go for the pair that didn't look hideous, despite them being slightly less warm than the hideous boots (the photo really doesn't do their ugliness justice, these are some ugly shoes).

That's what my knitted silk socks are for, after all, though they don't need to know that.

I am seconding your co-workers. Stick with the non-fugly pair. XD

Huh. I didn't know 'luggage' was a colour now.

Nor did I; I thought it was simply something to be avoided lest it ate you. Learn something new every day.

Thank you for reminding me that I need to buy boots like that. I have a pair of Ecco boots, that are warm and strong waterproof, and have awesome traction, but the are *twenty years old* -- you heard me; twenty years of Chicago winters in those puppies. At this point, I think they deserve to be retired with honors, though I will keep them after buying a new pair just in case the young'uns can't measure up to my Boots Emeritus.

DAMN! I know Ecco are good, but I didn't know they were THAT good!

Actually, my husband's had a couple of pairs that wore out in 2-3 years...

You should stick with the boots that keep you the warmest and comfiest. Whether they're ugly or not.

From: [identity profile] calliope-jones.livejournal.com
Hmmm. Is it totally not helpful to suggest they're both kinda ugly? I know, though. Finding winter boots that don't suck is hard. That's why living in the South is good.

Yeah, usually you can either wear combat boots or work boots and 90% of the time winter is ice.

I share your misgivings – Skechers is famous for making hip canvas shoes that don't repel water, never mind cold and snow. Maybe they've seen the error of their ways, I don't know, but if you can tell they're not as warm in your office, they difference will probably be ever so much more apparent in the snowy wastes of Antarctica Chicago.

Dude, toes are more important than pretty, keep the warm ones! Also, they both look like dairy boots, least the black ones are all black...

Mind you, I can't talk, the only reason my ugly red HH jacket is no longer in my possession is cause it got donated to the cause of little cousin's Malaysian friend not dying of cold in Dundee.

I'm unqualified to judge the aesthetics (seriously, if they weren't so expensive I'd wear these (http://localfarmsupply.com/outer-wear-175/dunlop-thermo-180/dunlop-thermo-csa-boot-size-8-5814.html?osCsid=f337df5e0519c6ff0f57893db1eec5bc) for most of the year), but I'll tell you, Kamiks are pretty awesome winter boots. Before I bought my new -40 rated ones, my winter work boots were Kamiks, and I don't think they ever leaked or froze.

Can't you get Sorels in Chicago? Now THOSE are some serious winter boots. Listen to your Canadian friends, we know about winter. Here's the link (http://www.sorel.com) Actually, it looks like the Skechers are just imitating Sorels, you should get the real thing, rated to minus 40 and waterproof.

Both of those are knockoffs on the classic Bean boot - http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/43351?feat=506794-GN2 - but they are a lot less expensive, so, since you don't get the discount I do I guess I forgive you. ;)

I actually really wanted the Shearling boot (WHAT I REALLY WANT IS THE BEAN DUCK BOOT FROM TWO YEARS AGO -- sorry, ahem. :D) But yeah, couldn't quite swing $150 for a pair. $100 for the Sketchers was really outside my budget, but mum sent me a couple of bucks to help out :)

Being the voice of boring - - get whichever ones are as stable as possible. It is irrelevant what they look like if you end up in a cast again.... Get ice cleats, great traction, ankle support, Samnofall soles.

Also. with the regular Bean Boots, they'll re-do the bottoms. Can your old ones be fixed at the source?

.

The old ones have gone to the big shoe rack in the sky, alas.

I had cleats but they made walking indoors incredibly perilous, and were too much of a pain in the ass to put on and take off multiple times a day.

Looking at all of the lovely photos of boots makes me glad I moved from Detroit to the desert southwest 20+ years ago. I remember buying boots based on keeping my feet dry and warm instead of how they looked.

Um-- was I seeing things, or was the color on the non-ugly pair listed as 'luggage'? I *swear* that's what it says; the choices are 'black' and 'luggage'. **headscratch** ........just went back and looked again. Yep, luggage. That's different.

And they're by Sketchers! Well, no WONDER they fit well and look good; that's pretty much the only brand of shoes I swear by (I swear at any number of other brands, though.) I like sketchers; they hold up and they tend to fit me well.

Good choice! And knitted silk socks are the bomb.

It must get really cold in Chigaco if you need such a serious pair of shoes for everyday! I don't know if to feel impressed or sorry for you.

I can actually get away with wearing converses or suede shoes most of the winter in Athens (with two pairs of socks because I get cold easily and they don't sell proper woolen socks in Greece). When it properly rains or gets cold, I wear my leather camper boots. If - god forbid - it snows, we usually get the day off work because all public transport stops running and everything grinds to a halt. Then I can finally wear the farmer's wellies and the woolen socks I got in Yorkshire that gather dust most of the year over here, and go for a romp in the rare snow before it melts - usually by next day.

the fringe on the Skechers will get dirty and stain over time.

on the other hand, the Kamiks have a heel. Like it's a platform boot or something. IDEK.

Also, it's funny that the Kamiks are the "also viewed" for the Skechers.

I wonder to what extent that is because of the Cafe.
