I prefer to think of this mushroom as "charmingly rustic" and not THE SADDEST MUSHROOM EVER.

Folding instructions here (now in English!). The mushroom the calendar wanted me to fold was too easy.

I read the following today in a book on art forgery:

Pathological liars are sometimes referred to as "folded," emotionally "enveloped" by their imagined selves, and thus "origamists," from the Japanese word for folded paper birds and animals. The origamists reflects a childhood deficit, say psychologists.

NOW I'M "WORRIED".

And also wondering if Jeff Eastin has read more pop psych theory than is good for him.

I now have Super Mario music in my head, and I'm blaming you ;)

OMG, it wasn't just me! I totally thought of Mario's mushrooms when I saw this!

This made me think of the dancing mushrooms in Fantasia. Now I have to go watch it.

I think that origami is just an art form and should in no way be connected to a psychological problem. Art is just art. (Said as an artist tired of being asked 'what does it mean')

I didn't get that they were disparaging origami, rather using it as a metaphor for the psyche of the pathological liar. It's 'the origamists,' i.e. the liars (as established in the previous sentence), who have a childhood deficit, not people who actually do straightforward origami with like actual paper and stuff.

you're right. I just wonder why that and not like.. sewing or something?

Well, everyone (I hope) knows what origami is, and can make the connection between folding paper around itself and doing the same with one's psyche; sewing is less straightforwardly foldy, and you have to have done some pretty in-depth sewing stuff to think immediately of contortion and convolution etc.

I got the dancing mushrooms too. I wonder if there's an age gap between those seeing Mario and those seeing Fantasia.

I suppose those expecting a caterpillar with a hookah to show up are just weird.

I've considered just telling them the truth. "It means I was bored and felt like drawing a pretty woman. Then I wanted to draw a pretty dress on her. Oh, and the rabbit is because my roommate said 'She should have a rabbit' and I thought that was a good idea."

But then they'd probably look at me and go "... no, really, what does it mean?" *sigh*

"I was bored" is usually my answer. Though I often go off on a tangent about how art is subjective and that's the point, what it means to me is not what it means to you.
