I have acquired new glasses! Kind of. Not really. I will have, in another week, when they come back from the lens lab.

My old glasses are perfectly fine, actually, and my prescription hasn't even changed (though the optometrist said I'm looking down the barrel of bifocals in another ten years, oh god) but the lenses are scratched to hell and back, which is what happens when you wear them through two Chicago winters, so I'm gettin' new lenses and frames that are basically exactly like my old ones except black instead of silver. I tried some chunky emo glasses on just to see if I still look like a douche in them, and yep, I still do. So, thin square frames it is.

BUT THAT'S NOT THAT INTERESTING. Origami is interesting! I folded a hummingbird today.

I'm pretty sure I messed up his ass, but I have it on good authority that hummingbirds don't care what their asses look like.

I dig the hummingbird. (And I will go back and respond to your question about my defense... soon. It's bookmarked. It just hasn't happened yet.

That is a REALLY good hummingbird. I almost wanna use one as a Hummingbird Decoy to try to lure them to my backyard...!

Well, you're seeing his most flattering angle, where you can't see the one mangled wing and the hideous ass. :D

Me too -- I got new glasses last week. My old ones were 8 years old. When they're that old, things tend to happen, like an arm falling off randomly while you wear them. They stayed on remarkably well with one arm, though. I hate adjusting to new glasses, which is why I always put it off until it's impossible to put it off any longer.

The chunky emo ones still didn't work for me, either! But I did get rhinestones, so at least I sparkle!

I have a mobile of colourful paper cranes. I can't take credit for it though, since I found the cranes already folded in a baggie for 50 cents at the local thrift store, and simply strung them up on a cardboard disc. :D

I liked it better before the directions said to fold down the top edges to make eyes. Now it looks like a Muppet hummingbird to me, 'cause its eyes are plopped on top of its head instead of being on the sides like a normal bird.

I kind of assumed the flaps were meant to indicate a brow ridge of some kind -- I folded them down and was like, "the eyes are underneath!" but I've just realised hummingbirds don't really have brows, do they.

Oh my god, I want to feed it sugar water! It's so cute!

Regarding glasses, my mom has health insurance that covers my dad and sister and I, so at the end of the year if there's still funds, one or two of us will get a new pair of glasses. (My sister has at last succumbed to our hereditary curse of bad vision, but only for reading. In contrast, I've been wearing them all day every day since I was eight.)

End result: currently, I have 4 pairs of glasses. One's red, one's light purple with bendy frames, one's black with rhinestones, and one's two-toned purple, and all of them are half-rimmed with it missing on the bottom because full frames make my face look extremely strange.

(also, AGH AGH AGH that vision/flash thing I had last week where I got a strong association with you, the dude was wearing SILVER SQUARE FRAMES okay I know other people wear them and you don't have curly hair but WHAT THE HELL.)

I am enamored of the idea that somehow, somewhere, there are "good authorities" on the subject of hummingbird butts.

Do not despair! I got bifocals in December, but they are not at all like the kind of bifocals our grandparents - or even parents - wore. They do take a couple of days to adjust to, but after that? Oh, they are marvelous. I'm more than kind of pissed at myself for putting them off for a year or two.

Saw this, thought of the Cafe:

*head-tilty* Sam, has LJ done something to your spam settings again? I keep seeing "Spammed comment" blocks with your replies indicating that they were in fact awesome non-spam off-LJ links. :P

I know some comms will count any off-LJ link as auto-spam (there's a tickybox to fix it); I don't know about journals, but I wouldn't be surprised if they'd recently done something like that. :-(

LJ tries to label anything as spam if it has links in it, I think. I'm pretty sure I reset it eventually.

bifocals in ten years? pah - I've had bifocals since the seventh grade. it's not scary, and the progressives don't have a visible line, so nobody but you and your optometrist will know. and, well, the rest of the internet. but that's it!

Oh, I like the hummingbird! Or giant mosquito. They're so big here in the Canadian prairies, the only way you can tell the difference is if they're going for the red liquid from the pot hanging in the window or your jugular.

I think you should draw some tiny square glasses on him, though. :D

You should get chunky emo frames some year! They're hella fun.

Except I don't think of them as emo, I think of them as fobby. And I hear they can be construed as hipster too.

...which came first, the emo, the FOB, or the hipster? A question for the ages.

I don't even know what a FOB is, but I'm pretty sure emo spawned hipster somehow.

Hee, I've been strictly in chunky emo frames since they came back into style

Mind you, my glasses choice usually comes down to the girl in the opticians going 'Right! No purple this time!' and plonking a series of frames in front of me until we find something we both agree on. For I am not safe to pick my frames by myself, especially because I fit kids frames and could easily end up going home with Angelina Ballerina down the side of them.

I have had bifocals for five years now-the progressive lens are wonderful. It takes about a week to get your eyes used to them; then you wonder how you did without them. Best part- you don't have to look like Ben Franklin-unless, of course, you want to.

I had to get over the bifocals thing - I'm 27 and I've had reading glasses and distance glasses for at least five years now. I've always had crap eyesight, and I just wanted the headaches to stop. It's really not that bad; I decided not to feel old about it, and I don't. I can't really blame it on my age, anyway.

Unfortunately, I'm also in desperate need of getting my reading glasses replaced (since I wear them most often, but they're also about four years old). The lenses are very scratched but I can't find ANY frames that I like and I never liked the old frames.

And now, I've broken my big toe which will seriously hinder glasses shopping for the next week.

Yay hummingbirds!

NICE hummingbird! Much better than the pattern I tried once, mine looked fat and anything but aerodynamic. And you're right, they probably don't care.

Bifocals, truthfully, can't be told from regular glasses now due to the fact that they've gone completely 'lineless'. I have freakin' *trifocals* and I love them to death-- they make 'em that are designed for heavy computer use, and my eyes don't get nearly as tired as quickly as they used to. They do cost more, but they're worth it. And I don't have to change glasses to drive or anything, they're good all-purpose specs as well; it takes a few days to get used to them but honestly? They're wonderful.
