Good morning! It's snowing here in Chicago, or at least it was a bit earlier. So I ventured forth in my Dalek hat and my Green Lantern gloves and my Sherlock Holmes scarf, for lo: I am Geekman, patron saint of sartorial dorks everywhere. (You will note, the hat is Evil, the gloves are Good, the scarf is Neutral. It's important to be balanced.)
I mean, uh, welcome to Radio Free Monday!
Ways to Give:
ineptshieldmaid let me know about
niamh_sage, who is preparing to cycle up Mount Ventoux to raise money for Alzheimer's research in honour of her grandfather and Terry Pratchett (she's cycling on May 25!). You can read more at her cycling blog,
lilactoventoux, or check out fundraising details here.
metaurora56 will be participating in The Walk For Hunger in Boston in a few weeks, and is looking for sponsors!

sairaali is working to raise antiracism awareness in her church community, and is trying to help raise funds for anti-racism training. She's offering to write and publish essays/sermons for every $50 raised. She doesn't want to give out the name of her church for identity reasons, but she sent me the church website and I've vetted it. Normally I don't endorse giving to religious orgs, but this is a liberal, everyone-friendly church and the money is going to a specific anti-racism cause, so I think it's a good thing.
I've spoken before about
meganphntmgrl, who is trying to find a job and some independence in upstate New York, where jobs are hard to come by. She needs to raise $140 for travel to Staten Island to interview for a nanny position there -- if you can help, her paypal address is megan_phntmgrl@sbcglobal.net.
coriana let me know about a theatrical production called Toilet Bowl Love, which is raising money to go on the road. You can check out the show at the kickstarter page -- apparently it's the moving saga of a woman's relationship with her toilet, which sounds pretty awesome.
News to Know:
iamshadow let me know about Wretches And Jabberers, a documentary about the misconceptions surrounding autism and particularly people with autism on the more severe end of the spectrum.
topgeargirl2 linked me to an article on the ALA's "Most Challenged" books of 2010 -- the books which people most frequently try to censor or have removed from library shelves in the USA.
(As an aside, I once made it my mission to read as many of the top 100 banned books of all time as I felt was possible, given I was an undergraduate at the time. Most of them are so mind-numbingly boring that it's a wonder anyone reads them voluntarily to begin with.)
Mink links to more bullshittery from Amazon, this time having to do with pricing at their App store. I don't pretend to understand everything going on in the article, but I do understand enough to know Amazon's being shady again.
Events:
dancing_moon wanted to get the word out about the upcoming yaoi/slash con, BLYG '11, which will be taking place in Sweden this June. Small cons can always use a hand! They're looking for people who'd like to attend, as well as those who are interested in doing panels or events.
brainwane, aka Sumana Harihareswara, is doing geeky standup comedy in New York City. She has a half-hour gig coming up in Astoria on the 21st, as a preview/workshop before a keynote speech at a tech conference later this month. If you're in the area, check it out!
Stuff for Fun!
At my behest, @cleversimon posted the Sonnet On Canabalt that he recently wrote. Even if you don't know Canabalt, I think you will sincerely enjoy his postapocalyptic verse.
ponderosa had a post up recently about an iPhone app called The Hippogriff Cookbook which looks awesome. HP fans will want to check it out!
IT'S A FESTIVAL OF GRILLED CHEESE.
A couple of people have linked me to the Eagle Cam, showing a nest of baby bald eagles and their parents in realtime, but until last night I couldn't get it to work. Now it does and I keep swinging wildly between "God DAMN those things are ugly" and "AWWWWWW."
Travis Louie's The Creature Show is a series of Victorian-style portraits of people with their mythical and fantastical pets (as well as one of a Gentleman Cthulu). It wigs me out, but in a good way.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help. Remember, non-embedded links are love.

Date: 2011-04-19 01:37 pm (UTC)It makes me think Amazon isn't such a good company which makes me sad since I use them a lot to buy things I can't find in stores.
