I am having a moment. And I don't even know why! I feel overwhelmed, which is bizarre, because rarely in my life have I actually been this on top of things. My bills are paid, I cleaned the flat, I have food in the kitchen, I'm keeping up with work, none of my socks have holes in them. And I'm wigging out about how totally not-in-control of things I feel, which of course doesn't help.

I'll work through it, it's just weird.

ANYWAY, I did a Rather Complicated origami today, made no easier by the fact that I think really this is the kind of thing that should be wet-folded with very thin paper. BEHOLD THE MIGHTY EAGLE. Or something.

There ended up being kind of a lot of paper at the tip where the head and beak were, which made it difficult. Still, nothing ventured. And now I know how to fold a Frog Base, which I did not know before today.

Sometimes when I'm on top of things, I get bewildered because....well *now* what do I do? Not procrastinating is confusing. This hit every year in high school in the month long gap between big projects being due and finals.

(What is with me being first comment everywhere today?)

...does this look more like a giant winged mouth than an eagle?

It's kinda got a vulture look to the head. *squint* I do see eagle though.
Being on top of things is it's own kind of hell. This is why I always leave at least one thing undone. LOL Or four or five.

I have panic attacks like that all too often.

"ZOMG I AM NOT ON TOP OF EVERYTHING EVEN THOUGH NOTHING IS FALLING APART WHAT AM I GONNA DO THE SKY IS FALLINNNNNNNNNG!"

It's quite draining. I hope yours ends soon!

Suggestion? If you're on top of stuff and it bothers you, and it doesn't bother you when you *aren't* on top of stuff, then what you need is something to climb up on top of. I'm not trying to be funny here; I'm actually quite serious. You need a project-- not a goal, but something you're learning. If you find that you deal with things best by having something to work on getting better at (like origami, for instance), then start learning a new craft. Like I said, not kidding; it's a coping strategy that I use.

And I would suggest: knitting. No, really, knitting. Being in the SCA, I know quite a few guys who knit, and it's both simple to start with and insanely complex depending on what you're making and you can find TONS AND TONS OF STUFF about it online. And it's got historical precedent and weird trivia and dear *gods* it's useful and (most of all) it's portable. I've hauled mine so many bizarre places; the major drawback is that I can't bring it with me while I fly (except in the bowels of my suitcase) because I might possibly find it in my mind to stab the staff with my solid maple Size 5 DPNs for some reason, wtf.

Anyway... just a suggestion. I suspect that Japanese Fighting-Kite building, designing a working TARDIS out of Legos or learning dentistry online would work as well but would be more expensive and less portable (though I'd love to see the results. Take pictures, please!)

Seconded! While my anxiety usually is the "OMG I'm so not on top of stuff, it's not even funny" kind, I find knitting very soothing anyway.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] ysabet, re:no knitting in airplanes, have you tried finger knitting?

You can knit on planes! At least you could the last time I flew.

Holy shit; SouthWestern told me I couldn't about two years ago when I called to ask, and I haven't looked into it since. I'm printing this out and taking it with me! Because I could've gotten so many more socks finished while waiting hours and hours at airports that it's not even funny.

Thanks, all of you who went YOU CAN TOO KNIT WHILE FLYING! Because I really did need to know that.

What I find hilarious is that they take people's knitting needles, and the tiny little file thing on nail clippers, but they let me walk on with my bag full of pointy pencils without a second glance. I declare them when they ask if I have anything sharp, and they usually wave me away with a 'very funny' expression. Airline security staff: NO IMAGINATION.

Totally agree. I remember a Detective Conan episode where the murderer killed her victim with the underwire from her bra (and I think that's been used in other series as well). If you can modify your surroundings or the actions of other living things with an item, it's a tool; if you can use it to dissuade/hurt/kill said other living things, it's a weapon. Doesn't necessarily mean it's a GOOD one, but oh well.

I'm not really sure it's being-on-top-of-stuff that bothers me -- I don't feel nervous that I have nothing to do, I feel genuinely like I'm not in control even though I visibly, tangibly AM.

Unfortunately, knitting is a skill beyond my ken. I've tried, it's too mathy.

Random beyond measure, Sam, but it's driving me berserk and I'm certain I saw it here: what was the name of that LJ comm where people could ask "Where did I put my *insert lost item here*" and other people could offer suggestions for where it might be?

The eagle has teeth. It's a prehistoric pterodactyl/eagle hybrid. A very angry-looking one. ...Or maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way.
