Good afternoon all! I am home at last -- though I had a great time with the family, no fights this time and no bad food -- so it's time for a rather belated Radio Free Monday!

Ways to Give:

In one of the first Radio Free Mondays, Ashley let me know about a friend who was doing the Living Below The Line challenge: living on $2 a day for food and drink. This year Ashley herself is participating, and raising funds for the Oaktree Foundation. You can find out more about the Oaktree Foundation and about sponsoring Ashley at the Live Below The Line website.

[livejournal.com profile] maidenjedi linked to the Texas Forest Service's fund to aid volunteer firefighters dealing with the Texas wildfires.

[livejournal.com profile] slice254 let me know about Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue in Baton Rouge, who are taking in some rabbits rescued from a breeder who was planning to euthanise healthy rabbits because she couldn't afford to keep them (you can read more about the rescue here). The rescue is looking for donations for spay/neuter surgeries, food, cages, and etcetera. I'm sure they need foster families too, if you're in the area.

Help Out And Buy Stuff!

I've mentioned Wretches and Jabberers previously, but [personal profile] iamshadow reminds me that this coming Thursday is the One Night For Autism event, where a hundred theatres across the US will be screening the film and educating audiences about autism and disability awareness. You can look here to see if a screening is happening near you!

[personal profile] iceshade wanted me to remind people about [livejournal.com profile] helpthesouth; I linked them last week, but they now have offer posts up where you can bid, including a request post where you can request specific commissions.

Christine let me know about Bo, a gorgeous German Shepherd rescued from euthanasia by a surgeon at UC Davis, and the entire school is raising money for his total hip replacement surgery. They're having a fundraising party this coming Wednesday -- if you're in the area, it's a great chance to help a Davis "family" pet and have some fun!

Help for Free:

[livejournal.com profile] panaili's brother has won a Pepsi Refresh grant to collect and donate books to Chicago public schools. The more votes he gets, the more funding!

[personal profile] xtricks let me know that Ogi Ogias and Sai Gaddam of SurveyFail are back. If you dealt with them the first time you can express your distaste for them at Freakonomics; if you're new, you can do some reading here or google for "surveyfail" and you'll find plenty of linkposts. And be sure to check out the hilarious and well-deserved tags people are leaving on their Amazon page. These guys are rancid douchebags who give science a bad name. (See also their studies in marketing to women using Pickup forums.)

Just for Fun:

Perhaps not as "fun" as usual, but fascinating: software "robots" can develop altruistic urges.

For those of you who voted in the Smithsonian's poll about what video games to include in their new exhibit, the results are in!

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help. Remember, non-embedded links are love.

Can we eat the rabbits?

I imagine you can if you don't tell the adoption agency that's what you're doing...

Nah, then I'd have to go through all the neutering and stuff. I can get them cheaper and already skinned and cleaned at the butcher.

Mmm.... rabbit...

*giggles* Good, I'm not the only who has that sort of reaction to rabbits.

Ugh, every time I forget about the existence of SurveyFail, it pops up again. WHY.

Because they're obviously cockroaches.

The PUA forum bit is choice.

I'm just busy giving the up-thumb to the appropriate Freakonomics commenters (and of course it would be the Freakonomics crowd that would be interested in this)...I don't want to dive into a cesspool today. I'm having a good day, dammit. :P

Glad there were no casualties-- I can survive most of my relations for three days, but there are a couple who give me the urge to pinch their heads off after half an hour.

You mentioned that you would like to see the cranes that my students made for the "Cranes for Kids" program. I finally got around to posting a couple of pictures: http://wistfulmemory.livejournal.com/185038.html

Sure! :) I'll leave the entry unflocked for a couple more weeks. Let me know if you need anymore info.

Wow, Live Below the Line looks really cool. I am tempted to try it but I am so lazy I'd buy $10's worth of rice and just eat that for 5 days....which is kinda what I've been living off the past week...I should spend more on food.

Well, the idea is to try and get something nutritious -- you can't afford meat, so you make do with potatoes and things like that. It really is for a good cause! :D

Just something cool I found on teh internets and which many people on here might be interested in:
http://motherjones.com/media/2011/04/vivian-maier-john-maloof - The story of Vivian Maier.

The photos are amazing!

The official website is here: http://www.vivianmaier.com/

And if anyone in the Chicago area is interested, apparently they are having a panel/discussion about her works and what to do this monday (16th May 2011): http://www.explorechicago.org/city/en/things_see_do/event_landing/events/dca_tourism/PanelDiscussion_VivianMaierWhat_Next.html

Yeah, I've linked to her on the journal before :D But the panel is new! I will definitely RFM.
