I thought, it's Monday, it's been kind of stressful, maybe I'll fold something easy today. I know! A tulip! What could be easier than a tulip?

EVERYTHING, AS IT TURNS OUT.

Granted, part of the problem was the paper I was using, but still. That is a SAD TULIP.

(You can find the stem fold here; it does tend to make any flower look much more distinguished and professional, even the really badly folded ones.)

On the contrary, that is an awesome tulip.

Lovely tulip!

On a related topic, you need this -- http://www.bleedingcool.com/?p=80181 -- in your life.

Wow.

I wish someone would explain how to translate those incomprehensible line diagrams into one of those awesome and amazing folds.

Seriously. My sister is an origami(-er, -ite, -eteer) so I'll be curious to see if she can figure it out.

I got her a book at the library this weekend, 'Jurassic Origami', that has a folded dinosaur fight scene. So cool.

I actually linked to Brian Chan a couple of months ago, so I'm totally taking credit for him going viral. :D

I'm still all confuzzled by the difference in paper types. I have some "real" Japanese paper, but it doesn't seem to work because it's too soft. All the folds fall apart. Whereas my cheap-ass neon poster paper is working out very well. I am enjoying the bookmarks a lot. Heh.

Addendum: Apparently, you are psychic. The Canadian Tulip Festival was this weekend. Not, you know, that any of us Canadians outside of Ottawa have even heard of it before, but whatevs. ;) Go, Sam!

I'm not in Ottawa, and I know about the tulip festival...

...but that's only because my family are there. :)

Well, there's not just one kind of Japanese paper, so you probably got something more aimed at wet folding?

Paper varies not just in thickness (which is the main problem with the calendar paper, it's too thick) but also in the length of the fibres used and the quality, type, and quantity of additives like linen and cotton -- for instance, "onionskin" paper used in bibles versus "rag" paper used in dollar bills. :) But whatever works best for you is what you should stick with!

I did know ABOUT the tulip festival, though I didn't know it was this weekend :D

And Tulip Time in Holland, MI, just finished as well. More evidence of psychic abilities.

I recognise that tulip pattern! :) It used to be in this awesome book of origami designs in my school library.
One Mothers' Day I made my mum a little origami vase full of these tulips. She still keeps it on top of the piano.

Because I am a sucker for a pun.

Aw, poor blue tulip.

Incidentally, I like your tulip much better than the perfect and crisp one in the destructions. Real tulips don't have 90-degree angles!

This. Definitely prefer yours, Sam, that one on the instruction page looks too geometric.

At a student-led conference on Sat., a fourth grader was teaching his audience how to do origami cranes. We didn't finish in time (at least the adults). Apparently, grown-ups take longer. :)

There's something extremely beautiful about that, actually - it may be the graduated colours, the photograph, or both, but it's very striking.

Your origami has prompted me to start folding little things and leave them around my desk and the children's desk (everyone loves a frog), but now my boss has caught on and wants me to do a teen program on origami during our summer activities.

I blame you :P

(Now I'm going to go ransack your "studying the folds" tag.)

AHAHAHAHA it's like poor Claire and the webinars all over again. :D

Here are some free online origami archives if you want.

http://www.en.origami-club.com/ <--- Free, simple, with animations of difficult folds, kid-friendly. The best origami site I've found. :)

http://www.origami-fun.com/index.html <-- mostly easy but heavily skewed towards marketing her origami book
http://www.origamiaustria.at/diagrams.php?lang=2 <-- moderately advanced stuff, mostly
http://www.origami.as/Files/models.php <-- seriously advanced stuff
http://marckrsh.home.pipeline.com/ <-- do not link children to this, he does porny origami as well as regular.

You must let me know how it goes :D

Thanks for the links! I will definitely let you know how it goes, if and when it happens. Life's a bit nuts at the library right now, what with the tornado last month and school ending today and summer programs starting the week after next.

(My coworker was extremely amused by the pornographic origami at the last link. :P)

The program (which I did over a month ago, I just fail at reporting back) went really well! I started by showing them a few things and then one of the teens took over because she really wanted to show me something and ended up being a really great help. She had an origami calendar like yours and was actually WAY BETTER than me at origami. They had fun. It was only supposed to last an hour, but we ended up going almost 30 minutes over.

I remembered yesterday that I'd forgotten to get back to you when I gave two cranes and a jumping frog to some kids in the library. They were fascinated, and the boy ended up checking out The Strange Case of Origami Yoda.

I have a video somewhere for an origami yoda....

There are instructions in the back of the book to make Yoda. There's also a sequel coming out called The Revenge of Darth Paper.
