Oh man, maybe I'm not actually a grownup. I had the total five-year-old experience today -- went to the museum, got all excited, had loads of fun and an iced lemonade, got cranky and tired on the ride home, BREATHLESSLY informed the internet of everything I did today, and then had a nap.

I have learned something in 32 years of life, however, and I put aloe burn gel on my face and shoulders before I went to bed. Which is good, because I woke up with a sunburn.

I own sunblock. I went out specifically and bought sunblock at the same time I bought the burn gel last month. I just need to make sure I actually wear it.

The dangers of Going Outside now include bears (theoretical), parades (actual), and sunburns (inevitable).

I just last year started remembering to wear a *hat* when I go out to mow the lawn in summer.

Outside is always an adventure.

During an unexpectedly sunny spell last summer, I was finding I had a headache every afternoon at work. Then I realised that might possibly be connected to sitting outside on my lunch break in the direct sun for an hour.

Then I bought a hat and the headaches disappeared. Magic!

Then the sun disappeared too. *Shakes fist at English weather*

I guess that's better than finding that you've joined in a parade of sunburned bears... I should think they'd be rather cranky.

And me, I'm doing the kiddie thing today too. I'm sitting at home in my PJs reading comic-strips while I eat ice-cream. And I need to clean my bedroom, but I'm defiantly putting it off as long as I can (so there.) Clearly I got missed when they started handing out the adulthoods.

Do bears sunburn? They have awfully thick fur...

Hee. Glad you had a good day, Sam.

I also had a good day stimulating the economy! I was at a Half-Price Books (yep, Houston), saw this and thought of you:

Let us not forget coyotes (too awesome for words).

And for me, another danger of Going Outside is the descent into retail therapy (note to self: rent is important).

Tannic acid in black pekoe tea will take the sting from sunburn*. Put about four cup-sized tea bags into the bathtub, run the water at a comfortable-for-you temperature, and pretend you're an ice cub or a slice of lemon, whichever amuses you more ;)

I suppose you could use a couple of these, if you'd prefer: http://www.designboom.com/contest/view.php?contest_pk=25&item_pk=25799&p=2

*Only works on skin it comes into contact with.

I know another teabag recipe, and it actually works.

If you're really itchy, whether from a rash or dry skin or whatever - soak a chamomile teabag in cold water and rub it all over the affected area. You want it to be plenty wet - dip it in the water again if it starts to get dried out.

I'm not a total hippy; the strongest advocate now is my mother-in-law, who is the least 'alternative therapy' person in the world. She had a bad reaction to her hormone treatment and was going crazy with itching, and tried the teabag thing at our suggestion as an act of last resort. Two minutes later - *blinkblink* "Oh. It worked."

She then added it to the list of treatments she cold use on her Labrador that wasn't a steroid. Cara used to break out in dreadful hives if she touched anything in the Wandering Jew family of plants, and they had a real problem with them in their backyard then.

Alas, my bathtub cannot be plugged (such a long story). And I have no pekoe tea. But I did put an ice pack on my shoulders! That seemed to help.

Today it was raining, so I mostly acted like an adult--a boring adult. But I did spend part of the day painting a Chinese dragon on silk. The outline is complete, in metallic gold paint, and about half the background has been dyed royal blue. The dragon's head is "poppy red" (a new-to-me dye which currently looks orange, I'll have to see how that comes out) and his tail is orange and yellow flames.

I do the same thing RE: sunburn. I spend so little time outside that, unless I'm doing something like swimming or running around in the park, I will forget to put on sunscreen and come back inside looking like a half-cooked lobster.

Ow. Hope that clears up soon; I too am one of those who sunburns at the drop of a hat. (curse my Norwegian heritage/Pacific Northwestern upbringing!) I once got a *second-degree sunburn*. On *both* shoulders.

Word of advice. Don't do that.

(Speaking of ways to injure oneself, though, I found out today that the odd rash on my leg might be Pityriasis Rosea. I don't even know what that is. Apparently 0.14% of women in America ever get it. WHY IS THIS MY LIFE.)

Today was bike maintenance day, and as it was sunny and I was going to spend an hour or so outside, I made extra careful sure that I assiduously applied plenty of sunscreen, even remembering areas like the back of my neck that I often forget. I was very proud of myself!

I changed clothes this evening and by the pricking of my lower back, I realised that there had been a gap between my shirt and shorts, which the sun had gotten in. I now have a lovely tingly tramp stamp to remind me that I'm not used to summer clothing aaargh.

As another severely melanin-challenged person, my favorite way to use sunscreen is putting it on like lotion after showering. Wide variety of benefits: good memory sign post, moisturized skin, and, above all, you are protected EVERYWHERE. JUST IN CASE. :D
