Activities: Curtailed!

My one luxury that I really don't need but am loathe to give up is laundry service. My laundry guy picks up the bag of dirty laundry on Saturday morning and returns it on Monday morning, clean and pressed. This usually isn't a problem, except when I leave my ATM card, work ID, and CTA pass in my trouser pocket. I'm pretty proud that this is the first time it's happened in two years of laundry service, but it did happen.

I've called the laundry service (they aren't picking up on a Saturday, which only figures) and left them a message to check the grey trousers and please not wash my ID and CTA pass. I've already registered myself with the building so I shouldn't have any trouble getting in on Monday (the advantage of being the God of Building Access is that I can get in and list myself as a "lost ID" employee). I'm off now to deactivate my ATM card, just in case, but my travels for the weekend will be somewhat stunted by a lack of funds and having to pay up front for transit.

On the other hand, I still have my wallet with my credit card, other ID, and most importantly my library card in it. For real, do you know how hard it is to get a replacement CPL library card? It took me twenty minutes to get a new Social Security card last time I lost my wallet, but it took me three weeks and FOUR TRIES to get a new library card. You have to pay a cash-only fee and provide photo ID and proof of address in the form of an unopened bill from one of only a few approved sources. It took less paperwork to rent this apartment than it did to get a damn library card.

Between the sunburn, stitches, resignations, and now this, it really hasn't been my week. I'm almost afraid to go out, in case I break a limb.

You know, from anyone else, Sam, I would consider that hyperbole. ;)

This could be the universe telling you that it is time to stay in, eat ice-cream and read something Russian this weekend. At least you still have your wallet and keys!

Wonder why that is about your library card. When I lost mine I just gave my name, showed valid id with my address, and then paid a dollar. Pronto, a new card. I wonder which is safer both for myself and the library system. I know which I prefer. lols

I believe the CPL fee is either $5 or $10 for a new card. And in theory if I had a local ID with my address on it, I could have shown that, but since I have a Texas licence with my parents' address on it, I also had to bring in specific mail (I think it was "electric or cable bill" -- they were stunned and horrified when I said "I don't get cable") to prove I was me.

Blergh. Sorry to hear this. And...why did getting a replacement library card cost you four tires?

four tries, not tires.

First try: Didn't have cash for the fee (they wouldn't take card/check and wouldn't charge my account).
Second try: Had the fee but they couldn't make change.
Third try: did not have "correct" proof of address.
Fourth try: Brought in a week's worth of mail, the fee all in one dollar bills, and an expression of very limited patience.

They should count themselves lucky you didn't bring it in in pennies.

I'm glad to hear that Chicago is so careful of it's book. :) Surprised, though, that they go to that extent and don't demand a ten year background check... on whether you have ever abused books.

Yes, but the week wasn't a total wash. You had a meatloaf cupcake. Happy thoughts!

No checks you could write at the bank for cash?

I was at Albertson's last night, near the ATM machine and heard it ding ding dinging. If I had not been an honest person, I could've hit YES for another transaction and swiped all the money out. Some guy left his ATM card in the machine and just walked off. And yes of course I turned it in. Probably had cameras on it anyway... LOL.

Well, the bank gave me a new ATM card -- even though I knew where mine was it's always better to cancel it, just in case. But you are good for being an honest person :D And yeah, all those ATMs have cameras built in aimed at face level...

Man, Chicago's tough. I can get a new library card with 2 bucks and my driver's licence, takes a couple of minutes to produce the new card.

Well, if my licence were local or had my local address, it would have been slightly easier...
