Good morning everyone! This has been a TERRIBLE DAY so far, so let's hope RFM can boost my karma a bit, huh?

Ways To Help

The city of Minot, North Dakota, is experiencing heavy flooding and thousands of people have had to evacuate. The flood waters are at least six feet over the all-time record set in 1871. And it happened so quickly that while prepared for flooding they were not prepared for this; all the government could hope to do was build secondary dikes around vital infrastructure. [livejournal.com profile] _cadenza linked to the Minot Red Cross, the Minot Air Force Base Emergency Family Assistance Center, and personal appeals for help on Facebook: Community - Minot ND Flood Help and KX News Minot. [livejournal.com profile] eccentrikita linked to flood cams where you can see the devastation, the Minot animal shelter, and to a community rebuilding fund for when the waters recede.

Elizabeth let me know about [livejournal.com profile] lilycat who has posted to raise awareness about an infant named Leah, currently in the hospital with a mystery illness. Leah's aprents are asking for donations to help pay the medical costs. Leah's blog is here and you can donate here. Check out the raffle linked from the main blog, too!

Several people linked me to [personal profile] maevele, who needs help with rent money so she is not dependent on her husband -- whose "temper finally went critical and physical" and who is using his payment of rent as an excuse to stay in the house. Her fundraising post is here and an update on her fundraising efforts is here.

[personal profile] tealin and I were just throwing art around the other day when she happened to link me to John Frame, whose multimedia art production could use some assistance crossing the finish line. You can read more about his film/photos/maquettes and check out his donation page at the link.

[livejournal.com profile] rm and her girlfriend are looking for a new apartment in New York, especially given the cavalier way their landlord has treated their recent break-in. If you know of any, drop a comment!

Buy Stuff, Help People:

[livejournal.com profile] madripoor_rose let me know about Jennifer Matarese, who has self published a novel entitled Heroine Addiction, about a 'plus size, biracial, bisexual rockabilly ex-superheroine.' It took me a minute to make the connection, but Jennifer is also Trollprincess, whom many of you may know from LJ. She's donating half the proceeds of the Kindle edition sales to the Hetrick-Martin Institute, which runs Harvey Milk High in NYC. I've not read Heroine Addiction but I know Jennifer is an outrageously funny writer, so I doubt it will disappoint.

[livejournal.com profile] ships_harry is doing some $10 commissions to fill in an income-free patch. (That link has some NSFW images, just FYI.)

[personal profile] bodlon has an update on his surgery funding and has stuff up for sale still on ebay, which you can find at the link.

Good News:

[personal profile] rising got his new crutches!

The British Library and Google have struck a deal to digitise a shit ton of books. That's a technical measurement, by the way, "shit ton". It's less than fuckton but more than a metric assload.

Just For Fun:

Deborah, one of the admins of the the Copperbadge Cafe comm over on Facebook, has set up an event page for Cafe meetups! She thought the latest Potter movie would be a great time for fans to get together, and wanted to be sure folks over here on the blog knew about it. If you're interested you can also contact her at deborahsama at gmail.com.

[livejournal.com profile] minkrose linked me to Catalog Living. Oh my god.

[livejournal.com profile] chewipaka linked me to a meme that's been around the internet for a while but is usually a fun read, the Artist On LSD. I can't confirm it's a true story, but nobody seems to have disproved it, either. (Snopes, you fail me!) If they have, drop a link to where!

[livejournal.com profile] kayloulee wasn't even talking to me when she linked to an Ignoble-Award winning experiment into just how much the USPS will tolerate. I still LOLed.

I got to listen to two great radio shows this week that I'd like to share. [personal profile] tealin clued me into last week's Thinking Allowed, which opens with a discussion of HG Wells and sociology (interesting, but not especially relevant to me) and then has a long discourse on the magic of everyday things, which I loved. Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] delirieuse linked me to an Australian podcast of The Philosopher's Zone, in which they discuss the nature of evil as it applies to Daleks. Both are heartily worth a listen; Thinking Allowed is streamed, but you can stream or download The Philosopher's Zone.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help. Remember, non-embedded links are love.

Not that you or I could do anything about it, but I'm really surprised, as Googles digitized books are usually horrible - full of mistakes generated by the scanning equipment. Project Gutenberg at least has a lot of people who proofread.

So to use these terms in a practical context, Sam's Awesomeness Rating hovers somewhere just below fuck ton, then? Days with Stories about R or BossBoss put you at/above fuck ton level.

I actually went and saw the John Frame exhibit at the Huntington a couple weeks back and it is amazing, totally worth donating to. If I was a billionaire I would fund the shit out of it.

Ditto – I loved it so much I walked all the way down Allen from the Gold Line stop to see it properly on its last weekend. I just wish he'd enlist an experienced stop-motion animator to execute the animation he has in mind ... the models are so fantastic and the artistic value so high that some really good animation by someone who knows what they're doing inside and out would blow people's socks off. As it is now it's just a very interesting video installation.

I have to agree, the video was interesting but in someways it felt like I had just watched the preview to a movie that had been created on an acid trip. Either way the models blew my mind, it was very inspirational, and I regret not getting to go again before it closed.

wow, you so didn't have to do that. right now it looks like I am okay for this month, and can even pay off the electric bill without having to ask him for any extra. So I'm not like, urgently in need of help now, but I can't say I'm not worried enough about next month that I'm not glad for the signal boost and support.

I saw your update, but I know how tenuous situations like yours can be, and backup support never hurt anyone. I wish you much luck, and if you ever need another signal boost feel free to drop a comment :)

This is just a website that I found encouraging. If there are others (like myself) who find it enduringly difficult to "fit in" with gay culture, it may help a little.

I'm not really qualified to comment, I suppose, but while the article has some good points a lot of it reads like it's defining gay culture more by the stereotypes ascribed to it. I mean, I've hung out in gay bars and talked with friends who are gay, and I've never had that sense of monolith. Interesting.

I've found that, for myself, it takes some work to even convince people that I do belong there. Even so, since I'm married to a straight man, kids, or because I'm a Christian, I get treated like "the straight friend". There's this sense of "you don't really understand", like I'm just playing along. Or the ever-popular "bisexual = slut" which is just ludicrous.

Hey, Idk where Maevale lives, but in MANY states, if she can get herself to legal aid, there are legal procedures to get a spouse kicked out WITHOUT losing the rent. Something to consider.

Thanks for this! Minot's under a boil&conserve water order, now, but otherwise the city is holding up. The smaller towns downstream are... less so.

And on a personal note, if you could think good thoughts at my autistic niece who is in the hospital with something (she can't communicate really what it is) in the middle of all this upheaval, that would be nice. ://

Oh man, there's nothing worse than knowing something is wrong and not being able to find out :( Definitely thinking good thoughts.

I'm a reader of Regretsy, which started as a simply hilarious look at some of the strange things posted on etsy. There's a community there and they help each other out. One way they help each other is through what the site owner, April Winchell, calls April's Army. Each month, during the last week, a person in need is chosen and members of April's Army put stuff on sale specifically to benefit that person.

This month, the money is going to help out an etsy member's mother who's had a hell of a year. The post about it is here: http://www.regretsy.com/?p=42276 This is the etsy store for the group: http://www.etsy.com/shop/AprilsArmy Finally, April's Army has a Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Aprils-Army-Shop/201389053227642 This round ends July 5, but it'll come around again at the end of July.

These folks are snarky, funny, and downright good people. The site is sort of peppered with curse words, though, and some rather raunchy images sometimes, so NSFW.
