WELCOME TO THE SAM'S CAFE JOB FAIR, where our motto is "Being unemployed is some bullshit. Give me a job."

We are disorganized, but that's excellent preparation for life!

Basically, the idea is to bring all three thousand of us together in an orgy of job-seeking. We ask for advice and give advice and network without all the really gross slimy bits of networking.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A JOB...leave a comment! Tell us what you're looking for and where, and what your qualifications are, to the degree that you're comfortable.

IF YOUR PLACE OF WORK IS HIRING...leave a comment! Tell us what the job is and where, and what kind of person you're looking for, again, to the degree that you're comfortable.

Feel free to post anonymously if you wish, especially if you're linking to a resume or LinkedIn and don't want your screen name associated with your facetime identity.

Make sure you also read the comments, in case a match is out there waiting for you, or a colleague in your field has also commented and could be a good connection. If you have questions about applying for jobs or interviewing or anything career-related, ask! If you have some awesome advice to give, now's the time to share it!

If you're curious about how this has worked before, you can check out the previous two, and you may want to have a look at the Job Advice Sub-Thread [livejournal.com profile] snaxcident started last time.

Have at it, and keep checking back!

Recent grad seeks employment in KC area

I just graduated from college in May and I've been unemployed since. I'm looking for office work, preferably in Kansas City, MO, but at this point I'll take anything in the greater metro area.

I have 6 years experience as a student worker at my college library in the interlibrary loan department and I worked with the public in the circulation department.

I also worked as a researcher on a special project for my college endowment association.

Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Chicago/San Mateo/DC/NYC: AIR

This company is located in Chicago/Naperville, San Mateo, DC, and NYC. The company focuses on research and evaluation, concentrating (but not limited to) health and education. There is also a (small!) international division. The company is a non-profit, offers a leave for adopters, and a rewarding place to work. Different positions require different levels of travel. Some jobs require a Masters; others a PhD.

I like working with this company, because even I'm not making a difference everyday, I know the company is. Plus, since we handle so many different projects at once, I get to work in areas I really care about.

They're hiring editors, researchers, analysts, and more. Just go to the top of the main page and career --> career opportunities.

(ETA: Some positions are BA only.)

Good first step: I would get in touch with the Rochester School for the Deaf (http://www.rsdeaf.org/). It's in Rochester, NY, which is a great area-- and they would definitely be able to direct you towards resources for the career goals you have. Might be some stuff on their website, actually.

FYI -- I just checked it out, and it doesn't seem like they have any NYC openings right now.

There's a really active kink community in Halifax through Fetlife, are you familiar with it?

Also, I know some of the people who run Animaritime are based in Halifax. Perhaps you can get in touch with them about being a vendor next year?

I would like to relocate to Chicago, and I am looking for jobs there-- basically anything with 'research,' 'writer,' or 'editor' in the job description.

I have a Master's in linguistics, various random office-y skills, and 4+ years of experience as a (senior) research assistant at a university research center. My experience includes:

--tech writing, including software documentation, lots of reports pitched to various audiences, and co-authorship of an Urdu grammar
--all kinds of editing, including copy-editing and indexing grammars of languages I don't speak and putting out a quarterly newletter
--research and research support, including interview-based software usability studies, various lexicography projects, and literature reviews on all sorts of topics
--using ArcGIS cartography software to display and analyze all sorts of linguistic data
--writing, maintaining, and enforcing IRB protocols for a variety of human-subjects research projects
--teaching undergrads, which I never want to do again as a whole, but I do have and can use the whole suite of skills that developed-- course design, lecturing, and assessment

...and a slew of other things.

Also, I read a bunch of dead languages pretty well and German and Icelandic passably; though I don't read them, I've been supporting lexicography projects in Arabic and a bunch of modern Indic languages for several years, and I can copy-edit languages I don't read; I've got undergrad-level classics, anthropology, and medieval studies; I've done archaeological field school; and I read music and play piano and a couple other instruments.

I'm looking for any job where those qualifications would be a good fit-- university admin (possibly in a Human Subjects/IRB department), academic/educational publishing, museums or arts organizations, tech writing/editing or research positions in any field-- really anyone in Chicago who would hire me.

Not from one of Sam's job fair, but it gave me a little hope:

A few months ago, one of our library patrons who had been coming into the library regularly for over two years to use our job search computers got two part-time jobs, one of which included housing.

I know it's just one anecdote, but he'd been in utter despair.

I'm a recent grad with a BFA in illustration looking for an entry-level position with a company as a graphic designer. Ideally I'd like to work for a publishing firm designing book covers, but I'll take what I can get. I'm currently based in Cincinnati but would fall all over myself for the chance to move somewhere more interesting with good public transportation and/or is bike-friendly--Chicago, Boston, Seattle, wherever.

I have some experience freelancing and would totally do that or contract work (design or illustration) if there aren't any full-time jobs available. Also I can bake scones like a boss.

Resumé is available upon request, and my creative portfolio is here: kitmalls dot com (http://www.kitmalls.com).

Looking for work in Philadelphia

Full-time work is preferred; however, my department is being outsourced in mid-October, so as the time draws nearer I'd be willing to consider part-time position. I'm specifically looking for admin, communications, or editorial/publishing work (this includes freelance proofreading or copy-editing jobs) - I'd love to get into publishing or do something with a creative bent to it, but this is an ideal, not a requirement. I have a BA in linguistics with a minor in English; I'm detail-oriented, organized, and analytical. I'm a great communicator. I'm currently in customer service (phones and e-mail coverage), so I've got the phone voice and the people skills for any kind of administrative assistant or receptionist position. I have past admin and extensive proofreading experience. I find mistakes that our Communications Department missed...usually after the material went to print.

I'm a quick learner and hard worker: I may not know a certain program or job function, but it'll be worth your time if you're willing to teach me, because I'll pick it up fast. I'd be happy to provide a resume to anyone who's interested.

That's the problem she is having. Turn over rate is incredible. They get the experience, the money, then leave after 3-4 months. This is wrecking havoc with the kid. He won't settle down for the new people because he knows they will leave after awhile. So, they get tired of trying and leave.

Not horrible at all. This is, after all, about networking. I can answer any questions you have about the Illinois system, Chicago area and a little bit about the national arena. What can I do you for? ;)

Sorry about that, I didn't check if all locations were hiring. That said, the list is updated often, and people who work here do transfer between offices occasionally.

I know someone landed a job through connections on the first one, and on either the first or second someone else got freelance work. Also the job advice sub-thread seems to have helped people get jobs, if not directly hooked them up. :)

You might want to check out the University of Chicago's website (http://hrservices.uchicago.edu/jobs/). They seem to be looking for researchers, editors, and admins regularly.

FWIW, I found when I was applying to jobs in distant cities it helped to either have an address listed in the area (usually a friend) or be upfront in the cover letter, mention that you're looking to relocate and will cover costs personally. I got more interviews when I started doing that.

Bit of a long shot on this one, I appreciate, but I'm looking for work in the Manchester/Liverpool area of England, or at least work that means I can still live here. I have an undergraduate M.A. in History from St Andrews and I've spent the last two years working in an agricultural supplies company. I'm very much looking for a change, and some leads in the not-for-profit sector.

I have a varied and wide set of skills, in particular logistics and project management with administrative and organisational skills like you wouldn't believe. I also write the content for the various websites for this company, and if I can make turf sound interesting and varied then you bet I can do the same for you and your organisation! I also blog at The Disorientated Graduate (disorientatedgraduate.blogspot.com) which hopefully should give you some idea of my personal writing style.

Finally, however, my company is desperate for people with full forklift truck licences for shift work in Ellesmere Port, Lichfield and also the wider Liverpool region. Night work will almost certainly be included, and you'd need your own transport. If you or someone you know is looking for this kind of work, send me a PM and I can give you the details of my workplace and pass on your information.

Is the Chicago/Naperville more Chicago-ish or more Naperville-ish and if Naperville, is it near the train stop (Metra) by any chance? For editors and such, do you need a Degree In English, or is just, you know, being certified to teach it close enough for jazz?

I'm not looking for a job so much as ideas to where to look for a job.

I have permission from my beloved government to look for unpaid intern positions, but I have to find them myself. So far I've asked bookshops, the library and the local film fest, and I'm running out of ideas.

Ideally, I'd work in an office somewhere in a media (book/film/music/tv/magazine/pr) related company.

I'd also like ideas for classes/courses I could take to further my qualifications.

Oh! and I'm in Norway! But I'm hoping the ideas I'm looking for are international. :) Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have - seriously, anything is welcome!

I'll just point to my library's website where we have 3 openings right now: Naperville Public Library, http://www.naperville-lib.info/atl/job/job.asp

All three positions are 30 hours & good pay levels (I'm making about the same in my 20 hour position as I was working full time retail), and come with pretty good benefits. It's a nice company to work for - everyone I work with is so nice, they're very understanding, and there's lots of little perks.

You might want to post this position in Tucson, AZ; I work for a company that handles mental health clients for the state of AZ, and we had some layoffs not that long ago due to funding cuts-- there's quite a few qualified workers with *exactly* that kind of experience here in town, and being that you're only one state over you may well find some who'd be willing to move.

Good luck!
