Do you guys think maybe cupcakes bend reality? Because I think maybe they do.

This evening I wanted to stop off at one of the cupcake shops in downtown and pick up some cupcakes, because I have a guest staying over and nothing says Awesome Host like cupcakes. So I walked across the river and caught the 151 bus, which was going to take me to northern Gold Coast where Sprinkles Cupcakes is. I wasn't going to be on the bus very long, so I went straight to the back and sat down next to the door, and then I hear HI! SAM! and I look up and there's Coworker Crush, in an adorable hat. On the bus.

So we sat and chatted until it was my stop, which was surreal, because I basically come up with at least three excuses a week to go upstairs to the reception desk in the hopes of seeing her, and here she is on the bus. Yes, I know I'm sad, move past it.

Anyway, she said she'd been to Sprinkles and there's always a line because their cupcakes are super-popular. I figured, even if there was a line my experience could not possibly be any worse than the one I had at Magnolia Bakery, where menus surprise them.

It turned out there was a line, but the line appeared mostly to be because the salespeople were...not terribly well organised. To be fair, the people waiting for cupcakes weren't either. But at any rate I didn't leave the store going "These better be some motherfucking amazing cupcakes for what I just went through to get them" like at Magnolia. I was just like, "Well, these are probably some pretty good cupcakes, so waiting in line wasn't too bad."

These are some motherfucking amazing cupcakes, you guys. I may have gotten chocolate cupcake everywhere, but it was totally worth it.

So yeah, I have yet to have an experience with Chicago cupcakes where the word "normal day" applies. Cupcakes: the true nexii of reality.

Damn, I almost expect the lyrics to 'Friends' to roll out. Because you're living the sitcom. In a good way.

I nominate the girl who played Phoebe Buffay as Coworker Crush.

I imagine Coworker Crush as looking like Zooey Deschanel or Rachel Bilson or Kate Beckensale in 'Serendipity' (although that's largely because of the Cupcake Encounter).

I think all cupcake shops must be off- I work down the street from a Georgetown Cupcakes, and on weekends there is always a line out the doors, because apparently it takes 10 minutes to put a dozen cupcakes in a box.

Speaking as someone familiar with customers, it takes ten minutes for some customers to DECIDE what they want put in the box.

The Cupcake Goddess has spoken (and She has to be female, because, well, cupcakes. Or maybe She's a S/He and is androgynous) and therefore you must ask Coworker Crush out. Seriously, offer to show her a bakery or a cake shop-- clearly this must involve baked goods. Go out for cinnamon rolls! Promise to show her the best pie shop in Chicago! Drag her out for donuts, for crying out loud!

(Speaking of cupcakes, I read somewhere today that marshmallows are the next cupcake-like sensation. Me, I just can't see that somehow. Marshmallows belong on a stick over a campfire, not in a sweetshop.)

Also? I can't help wondering if somewhere Coworker Crush is blogging about how There's This Guy And I Wish He'd Get A HINT, Dammit...

There's a chocolate shop near me that does marshmallows like gourmet candied apples--covers them in caramel or chocolate, drizzles them with strawberry sauce, rolls them in sprinkles or nuts, that kind of thing. I can't really see it being a nationwide craze, though...

Or not, because my hips really don't need more incentive.

I'm beginning to think you need a tag for cupcakes. I'm too tired and pissed off to come up with a witty one, though.

P.S. you once linked to a meta Sherlock fanfic. I read it, and it was brilliant, but I have misplaced the link. Could you give it to me again, please?

If you like the idea of "BNF fic", and you're familiar at all with Merlin (or even just with the Arthurian legends, really) you might enjoy the originator of the genre: "Pairing Pendragon/Merlin"

http://merlinkinkmeme.livejournal.com/12537.html

Date: 2012-01-14 06:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bare-bear.livejournal.com
Oh, I read that ages ago (actually, through a link on your journal, if I remember correctly), but thanks for the link! I've been meaning to hunt it down and bookmark it. :)

Normally, this sort of fic probably wouldn't appeal to me. While I've been in various fandoms forever, I never really got THAT much into them, and I'm certainly not a contributor to any of them beyond gushing comments on fics and pics. But Pairing: Pendragon/Merlin was adorkable and the multi-media fun to follow along. The Theory Of Narrative Causality is even more so, hense giving it a chance.

Reading these two stories make me feel like I've missed out on so much in fandom. :(

Everyone gets different things out of fandom, and remember stories tend to idealise -- this isn't necessarily how all fandom experiences would go. :) But they are fun to read, aren't they?

Date: 2012-01-14 03:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bare-bear.livejournal.com
True. I never had the time to dive in more, but I think fanfic kept me sane during the most crazy times of my university career (which seems a common enough theme). I enjoyed these BNF stories, just because it is such a different perspective on fandom than my own experiences.

Do you have anymore BNF fic recs you can pass on?

Date: 2012-01-14 03:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com
There aren't that many -- those are the only two I know of, I think, though there have been shorter ones here and there in fandoms I don't read, I believe. Sorry I can't help more!

Date: 2012-01-14 04:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bare-bear.livejournal.com
Aw, you got my hopes up with all this talk of having a tag for this sort of fic. :D No worries, it was worth a shot. I'll just have to keep my eye out for more!

Sam, I love you, but honestly, you are just hopeless.

THE UNIVERSE pushed her right into your bus. THE UNIVERSE is asking, what ELSE do I have to do, for crying out loud?!

Don't task THE UNIVERSE anymore. JUST ASK HER OUT. NO SANE WOMAN TURNS DOWN CUPCAKES. EVER.

It can be as simple as, hey, I'm heading out to Sprinkles, can I get you anything? Would you like to come with me?

That easy, Sam.

We have like half a dozen :D Sugar Bliss, Crumb, Molly's, and Sprinkles; then there's Lovely and Magnolia, which both serve other stuff as well. And there's a cupcake truck that rolls around in the summer sometimes.

Magnolia and Sprinkles are both nationwide chains -- the one got started in NYC, the other in Beverly Hills.

I don't think we have any at all here in the Uk - or if we do, they're probably confined to London. Plenty of bakeries of course, but nowhere that specialises in cupcakes. But then it's only in the last couple of years that Krispy Kreme doughnuts have reached these shores (and then I've only seen them in motorway service stations...)

Although there was a stall in the Derby Westfield Centre which sells big fabric cupcakes for some reason I didn't get round to investigating. I got the impression they were soft toys, but possibly they were baskets...

It's definitely confined to large urban areas in the US -- New York, downtown Chicago, Beverly Hills. I would expect London to maybe have a few, but it'd be one of the few cities that would, I think.

(Sprinkles is technically just south of the Gold Coast which begins at Oak Street and goes north to North Avenue.)

I'm glad you enjoyed the Sprinkles cupcakes! They are my favorite. I like how you can always tell from their website what cupcakes will be on sale that day. You can also avoid the line (which is unusual for a weekday evening) by ordering online and then just going up to the cash register to pick up your order.

There is also an awesome Belgium bakery on that block but its the sort of place you have to go to in the morning to get their freshly made yummy (but pricey) croissants and bread.

Ehhh, depends on how you define Gold Coast. That's not a standard definition (because there isn't one). River North/Gold Coast/Streeterville are all sort of part of that "north of the loop" muddle, just like how depending on the person you talk to I either live in Wrigleyville, Uptown, or Buena Park :D

The bakery -- is that the one in the ground floor of the condo building? There's a great leather repair shop right down the alley from it.
