It's probably about 60F in Chicago right now. The sun is out, and spring is on the way.

I will not be physically comfortable again for six months.

I am so very against heat. I have no idea why anyone would voluntarily pay to go somewhere warm for a vacation. I want to escape the warmth!

I should have been a polar researcher. Surely there are project manager positions open in Greenland or something.

They finally hired my replacement for my old job, who I got to meet today. I was bummed they didn't hire the woman who's been temping in that position, but apparently she didn't have enough experience. (Six months of doing the job doesn't qualify? I hear you ask. Welcome to one of the many reasons I'm glad I got out of that department.)

I don't want to say the woman who did get the job is stupid, but...well, there's a certain air about her I can best describe as vacant. Perhaps she's just overwhelmed. That doesn't bode well in and of itself, but I'm willing to extend the benefit of the doubt. I won't really ever interact with her in a professional sense.

It may make my visits to the 19th floor to flirt with Coworker Crush a little more difficult, but my heart is pure and I will persevere.

It was 10 degrees here for most of the day! And sunny! And nice. I tapped maple trees. :D *feels Vermont-ey*

Maybe if you asked her out, you could flirt with her over cupcakes, instead of having to make your way past Coworker Vacant.

You can do it, Sam!

I agree. You should ask her to do something, like chat about books over a cupcake or two.

re: heat - i know, right? no one else agrees with me! But seriously, you can always put more clothes on, you can only take so many off...

I agree with you! But this logic always escapes people when I explain it.

This.

Heat sucks out my will to live...and my ambition...and my motivation...and my desire to be productive.

While I understand your logic, the problem for me and cold is that cold makes me hurt in a way that heat doesn't. I can drink cold liquids, put cool water on myself, but when my hands are so cold that I'm shaking and the joints won't stop aching for hours, I'm miserable.

I wish I could be less cold-sensitive, honestly.

Well, yeah, nobody wants to be so cold they're shaking. I just like the cold, because you can do something to prevent the shakes, as opposed to heat, where there's not really a lot you can do to prevent sweating.

I have a similar problem with my hands.... I am usually surrounded by piles of fingerless gloves. I just knit myself a new pair out of cashmere that are excellent. But I do get funny looks for wearing them when it's not "cold" to other people.

Having grown up in the tropics, I find having to wear anything more than a light jacket on top of my shirt incredibly frustrating.

Heat love. I don't get it.

Having spent my entire life in the tropics, I was completely useless when I visited Chicago mid May last year and was apparently right on time for a freak cold spell. I had 2 jackets, a beanie and gloves and my brain was still shutting down. (3 DEGREE CELSIUS WTH)

The UK is never really warm, you know. Well, okay, maybe for a couple of days each summer.

But you don't have humidity. Where I'm from, it makes the heat that much worse.

Our (UK) cold is usually very damp, which makes it feel lower than it actually it. I was chillier at 3C here than I was at -6C in Canada...

I, on the other hand, cannot stand to be cold and thought I love cold weather and all the clothes that come with it, don't think I could survive in a place that stays colder than the high 40s for very long.

Off topic, but, Sam, I am pretty sure it is your fault that my senior research paper is about Captain America and Ironman, his boyfriend.

...yeah, I don't have an on topic comment.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Oh man, explain yourself, I want to know what your thesis is!

From: [identity profile] purplevks.livejournal.com
Basically, it came time to choose a topic and I blurted out the first thing that sprung to mind XD So I'm writing A) about how Capt and Tony both follow Joseph Campbell's heroic journey within the first 24 volumes of The Avengers (what I had on hand at the time) and B) that the reason they both fit the model so well is because comic books are just one way of modern culture expressing its desire for heroes.

My actual thesis statement is a work in progress >.>

From: [identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com
Nice! Yeah, I can totally see that.

God knows, nobody in the sixties was reading the Avengers for its witty writing. The plots were good but the actual dialogue and structure...ay, not so much.

been there with the temping and not getting the job... and yeah, there were politics involved in that one... I'd have preferred he told me that he didn't want me to apply... ah well, water under the bridge

and I'll take your heat any time... the idea of being a polar researcher is my idea of a nightmare... I like to be warm

Ah, but there's a sweet spot between "put another log on the fire and pass me a 5th blanket, I'm freezing" and "I think I'm going to take a bath in a bucket of ice while drinking an ice-flavored slushie and watching a documentary about ice to cool off".

Today, for example, in DC, it was gloriously sunny and warm enough that I ate my lunch by the river, but I was also wearing close-toed shoes and a sweater, and it certainly wasn't "hot".

For me, the sweet spot is warm enough to allow me to wear sandals, but not so warm that I can't also wear long pants.

You really should ask her out. Just sayin'.
