I HAVE ACQUIRED SHOES.

I failed in a number of attempts I made today, but I have shoes. Nice shoes for work! Or, well, nice-looking black Converse for work, I'm going to work Tenth Doctor style. Anyway I now own six pairs of shoes, which is more than I've owned at one time in my entire life, I think. I'm not really a shoe person.

Every time I go downtown, though, someone says something questionable about my sexuality. This time I was in the Disney store looking at superhero action figures (shut up, action figures are cool) and a clerk in a headset walked up to me and said, "Hi! Are you a superhero fan? Do you have a superhero at home? Or maybe you just like strong men!" and I was like PLEASE WHY ARE YOU TALKING TO ME, WHY WOULD YOU THINK I HAVE A SUPERHERO AT HOME, THEY ARE NOT REAL.

So congratulations, Disney Store, your creeptastic store manager drove me hurriedly from the store with her remarks about superheroes. I went to the comic book store today and nobody there asked me if I had a superhero at home, though I did have a lovely conversation with the counter guy about X-Club, which is the fucking funniest comic book I think I've ever read. ("Oh! This has Dr. Nemesis, right?" "Yeah! He's hilarious." "I've never seen such a likeable character who hates everything. All I do is seethe in silence! I want hugs!" "I KNOW RIGHT.")

Maybe it's just Block 37. I was in the train station there the last time this happened, and they also house the Bakery Which Must Not Be Named.

It's amazing how often people confuse 'friendly' with 'overly familiar in an off-putting way.' Disney isn't the first company to have gone there but they do seem to have difficulty making it feel natual and not like someone who's trying too hard and needs a refresher course on 'boundaries'.

My nephew works for Blizzard Beach at Disneyworld, and he says that a lot of the employees who really toe the Mouse's company line creep him out in the extreme.

I do kind of like that she asked if you were a superhero fan first, the superhero at home line....I think was a clunky way of asking if you had a son you were shopping for? Last time I was at the Disney Store looking at the princesses stuff, a salesclerk asked me if I was shopping for 'your little princess.' I said I was just browsing for my inner child and she left me alone.

Oh, betcha Rose is right about "superhero at home." It made no sense to me till I read this.

I'm still weirded out that there are things on Block 37. Maybe it's the decades as an empty lot vibes that make it weird. Or the ghosts of old youth art programs.

Me too, tbh. I remember visiting Chicago in 2002 and it was a dirt pit then....

A) Aren't you kind of an Internet Superhero yourself?

B) I did NOT acquire shoes today. *grumble*outlet store*grumble* The shoes I want are not available in Canada. Because we are a far-off land, full of strange rules and customs. >:( And shipping is only by moose-express.

I also went shoe-shopping today. They, alas, did not have the right color so they are ordering it.

I think you should report the Disney store manager as "quite potentially having a drug problem" because I can't imagine why she would think that would be an appropriate comment to make, unless she was completely stoned.

I have avoided the Disney store for years for this EXACT reason.

Eurgh, that happened to my sister and I in the Disney store in Vaughn Mills mall north of Toronto (beware, everyone! Vaughn Mills is WEIRD!). The manager guy followed us around the store. And it was a small store! Dude, leave us alone.

I do not trust the Disney Store.

Oh my Gods, yes, Nemesis with that telepathic starfish. The funniest thing to happen in a Marvel book since, well, all of Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. You've actually reminded me that I need to at least get the last issue of X-Club before my money-woes enforced comic ban.

(I am also a fan of Jefferies discovering his sexuality and Kavita Rao's general awesomeness. A brilliant group of characters that deserve an ongoing.)

The Jeffries arc was lovely, right in the middle of all the LOL.

I got the first three issues. They sold out of 4 and 5. BUMMED. D: I mean I have the digital, but still.

And you've just reminded me that I need to acquire the first trade of Nextwave. Hee!

I definitely feel creepy going in one alone. Same with the kids' section of bookstores. I feel like I should be able to like, borrow a kid to take with me.

There's nothing wrong with looking at superhero action figures (...says someone who may have smuggled home a few interest-relevant Happy Meal toys from her fast-food job)! But man, that clerk sounds half like she was quoting advertising copy written by someone who gave no thought at all to how it would sound outside of a commercial.

I'm a big fan of Converse shoes. Was that the style you bought? In black? Were you always a fan of comic books or is this a more recent thing since you only recently seemed to be bloging about them? Am I being too nosy? When I was younger I used to sneak into my brothers' trunk where they stored their comics and read up on Spidey and Hulk and The X-Men. It was awesome.

Converse was the brand, yes, high-top is the style :) In black.

I used to read comics when I was a kid but never with any real intent, just picking them up here and there. I guess it's a recent thing?

See what you do? now I can't even read an interview with Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans without finding metric tons of subtext! (and I love it!)
here's the link if you would like to read it too:http://www.slashfilm.com/film-set-interview-the-avengers-stars-robert-downey-jr-chris-evans/

The way he reacts to RDJ, I would go with Adorkable, it's like puppy-love
