Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

This took less time than usual to prep. I think I'm finally getting the hang of this thing, eighteen months in...

Ways To Give:

[livejournal.com profile] off_coloratura is making her first solo album, of songs by Ricky Ian Gordon. All the details are available at her post and on her indiegogo site, where she's trying to raise $5k for the cost of recording and production. There are lots of perks offered to donors and it looks like it'll be a great album!

[livejournal.com profile] idancewithlife linked to the Locus Photo and Ephemera Archive Project whose goal "is to fund the preservation of a historic and irreplaceable collection of materials covering the science fiction, fantasy, and horror fields, including author and convention photos, correspondence, and other ephemera, accumulated by Charles N. Brown and Locus magazine over the past 60 years." They've reached their goal but of course could always use more money to fund the project.

Give For Free:

[livejournal.com profile] golden_d is trying to find a new home for her grandfather's two cats in the North Jersey or NY Metro area. The full info is here. They'd like to adopt out Buddy and Molly together, but the most important thing for them is that they go to caring families.

[livejournal.com profile] evil_girraffe is looking for part-time volunteer/outreach opportunities with the LGBT community, in the Baltimore/DC area. Info is welcome via PM, but email at rlynneroberts at gmail.com is preferred.

Need Some Housing?

[personal profile] kayloulee and [personal profile] ineptshieldmaid are looking for a flatshare starting in mid-april. The full info post is here but the basics are that it's a large master bedroom in Marrickville South, Sydney; second floor, insuite laundry, close to trains; they're looking for a queer-friendly woman, no smokers or pets.

[personal profile] merrily is looking for someone to sublet her room in Toronto for the summer while she's out of the country, from June 1 through August 31. She left a comment with full information here but the basics are that it's a 3br apartment with two other women on the top two floors of a 3-storey house; insuite laundry, a block from the subway, queer-friendly, no smokers or pets.

News To Know:

[livejournal.com profile] dorkabunny wants to remind everyone around this time of year that lillies are extremely toxic to cats -- just a few bites, and they can die of renal failure if not treated within a couple hours. She adds that poinsettias aren't toxic to animals; apparently the myth derives from an incident in the early 20th century that was misinterpreted (Snopes agrees).

[livejournal.com profile] tesserae_ reminded me about Call For Entry, which has a lot of new competitions/fellowships/etc looking for entrants at the moment. It's always a good place for artists in the Cafe to check on!

Just For Fun:

[livejournal.com profile] koken23 linked me to Viva Roma #5, a song about Ancient Rome set to Mambo #5 and in my opinion an improvement on same.

[personal profile] veronamay let me know that [personal profile] arduinna has written a multi-post history of fandom from 1994 through 2000(ish). I'm going to admit I haven't read it fully yet but it looks like a lot of fun!

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.

Little known fact, those plants commonly known as Lucky Bamboo that are popular because they are easy to care for are not Bamboo (a kind of grass) at all but are a kind of lily. As a lily, they too, are toxic to cats as I found out the hard way when my cat became ill from chewing on the leaves of one. She did survive but now has permanent kidney damage.

Oh, good to know! I'll toss it in next week's RFM.

Thanks. It took me a while to figure it out, even my vet didn't know what lucky bamboo was. Once I pulled the plant from my home and took it to work she started to recover. Watch for a chewed up Lucky Bamboo, vomiting from the cat, frequent drinking, frequent urination and reduced appetite.

I thought so too. I was all, I want one! But I would never figure out the puzzles! And a pneumatic computer intimidates me! It's so steampunk it's not even brass, it's wooden! It's like, druidpunk!

I've got a request for next week's RFM.

I'll be looking for a quiet place to stay in Central Los Angeles for about five weeks from the end of June through July, possibly somewhere around Koreatown or Silver Lake. If anyone knows anyone who'd have a studio or room to sublet to a geeky academic or anything I'd love to hear, but also I'd just plain like some advice on what's good, what to avoid, and if anyone knows a good place for cheap long-term car rental (trying to figure out LA mass transit is giving me a headache). I can be contacted by removing the spaces from gibber wacky at gmail.

Hi, I was wondering if you could help with a signal boost. [livejournal.com profile] diminished9th/[livejournal.com profile] lightningsparks's beloved cat Hero is having kidney problems, and spiralling vet bills combined with low/irregular pay mean she's struggling to get the help that she needs. There's more info (including what the situation is now, and a little bit about Hero's past) here (http://lightningspark.livejournal.com/821289.html?style=mine#cutid1). Thanks, Sam - while I can't often help financially, I do read all your RFMs, and I'm sure it's an invaluable source of help for a lot of people.

So random clicking brought me to this post about US internet providers possibly starting to police user downloads in July. I havent seen anything about this anywhere yet, maybe progress has stalled, but if it is actually happening then people probably might want to know?
