Good morning all, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

*checks RFM off the to-do list, winces at the rest of the to-do list*

Ways To Give

[personal profile] onebrightroad and [livejournal.com profile] stvincent linked me to the Transgender Housing Network, a new temporary housing network intended to connect trans folk in need of safe places to crash. Trans-friendly cis folk are also welcome to help.

[personal profile] tealin let me know about the Independent Shakespeare Company's fundraiser for their summer Free Shakespeare festival in Los Angeles. They're doing a benefit performance of As You Like It on May 12th for $25, and have a Kickstarter campaign going as well for non-locals. This is a great hardworking company, and they definitely deserve some support! Their Facebook is here with lots of interesting photos and stuff.

[livejournal.com profile] off_coloratura is ten days and about $1400 away from her $5K fundraising goal for her first solo album, which will be arrangements of songs by Ricky Ian Gordon. She has new behind-the-scenes videos posted here, and you can help support her indiegogo here.

When I was at C2E2 I got to stop and talk with some awesome volunteers for the Science Fiction Outreach Project, which travels to conventions to offer attendees free books and get folks interested in reading scifi. You can read more about them and find out how to donate your science fiction books here.

I also picked up an ad for a "choose your own adventure" graphic novel, Dime, which is raising money to pay for an artist/toner at Kickstarter. It looks like a fascinating project with some great art, and with 21 days to go they're only halfway to funded. Even if you can't give, if you like indy comics please pass the word to help get it funded!

The Windy City Ducky Derby is coming! Okay, not until August, but I'm going to be reminding people in the coming months because ducky derbies are fun and support a good cause. If you would like to "adopt" a duck for a chance to win fun prizes, you can get one for $5 or 6 for $25 here. I'm planning to attend the Derby this year and will have photos of the massive truck o'ducks they back up to the bridge and dump into the Chicago River.

Fans Helping Fans

[personal profile] tenlittlebullets is looking for geek-friendly roommates to rent a house in the Forest Glen/Silver Spring/Washington DC area.

[personal profile] brainwane is looking for a "Bug Wrangler" for the Wikimedia Foundation. The job is a work-from-anywhere position for someone with a year or more experience as a Wikipedia/media editor/contributor and with an archivist's mindset. You can read more about the position here.

Anon's coworker has found a stray dog in Chicago (Augusta and Washtenaw) and is looking for the owner. He's in good hands, but they can't keep him forever; black collar, no tags or microchip, not neutered. If the dog looks familiar, please call 815-557-1631.

News To Know

[livejournal.com profile] bummble happened to mention on my "ugh new gmail" post that she was disentangling herself from Google, and left a comment with an interesting guide to Google alternatives.

[livejournal.com profile] soul_cake_duck left a comment about new SOPA-style internet regulation and I'm going to confess I haven't done in-depth study, so I'm going to link to the comment since it's blurbed there better than I could do anyway.

North Carolina has a new amendment under consideration, "North Carolina Amendment One", to ban same-sex marriage across the state. If you're in North Carolina, the bill is up for the vote on May 8th; you can read more and find out how to help stop the bill here (scroll to the bottom for how you can help).

I do want to note that I found this information while reading the Lulu.com blog, and I couldn't be more pleased that my self-publishing company is ready to be vocal and public about their stance against this bill.

I posted about the Ghost Rider lawsuit stuff a few months ago, I believe, and there's new news: [livejournal.com profile] bluejeans07 forwarded me an interview with Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada about Marvel's legal wrangling with Gary Friedrich. It paints a different picture from what's been posted to date, so I think it's important to share.

Just For Fun

[personal profile] soc_puppet kindly allowed me to link to her father's account of the changes wrought in Catholic services by Vatican II, after reading a bit I wrote about it in a fanfic and a comment I made about my frustrations with the lack of readily-accessible information on the changes.

[livejournal.com profile] vivichick linked me to the Origami Crane Chandelier. It is a thing of beauty!

One of our Cafe members has a site called "Eimear reads the Helsinki Voice" which I think is pretty awesome -- as a non-native now living in Finland, she uses news articles to discuss Finnish grammar and vocabulary.

[personal profile] paxpinnae linked to the best-dressed group of protestors ever, protesting Abercrombie & Fitch's plans to open a children's store in Savile Row. I'm not sure whether to root for the class snobs or the giant capitalist enterprise!

[personal profile] mercurybard linked me to this awesome graphic of television series narrative time. I know it's not new, but I love it anyway.

[profile] ozisim linked to an interesting concept/prototype website for a gravity-defying lamp!

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.

Re: lost dog:

I live near there, and the pup definitely looks familiar. I'll ask around.

An addendum to the Independent Shakespeare Company post: Family tickets are $50, so if you have three or more people in your family that is something to consider. The ISC is kid-friendly, and it's a great venue for a family outing as the kids can run around the park if they get fidgety (though the shows are so entertaining this might not be a problem unless they are very young). An excellent Mothers' Day outing and supporting a good cause! Your mom would be so proud. ;)

Hi Sam,

I'm sorry for bothering you, but would you mind including this to your next RFM? I hope this is okay...

Link to the post on my journal:

http://theadaze.livejournal.com/26205.html

The crux of it is that I'm looking for advice on further study or work opportunities in the visual arts field - pretty much anywhere in the world. My life situation has been quite bad for a while and it's difficult to get started, so any advice at all would be appreciated.

I'm also taking art commissions as it is linked in the post, but it's not necessary to mention that if it takes too much space.

Thank you! :)

Re: Ghost Rider
As it happens, I shared that original RFM with a dear comics friend of mine who loved Ghost Rider many years ago. It turns out that Steve Niles screwed my friend over rights as co-creator on a project when Niles sold the movie rights. Friend could've sued, but just walked away bitter. So, yeah, it's messy out there. Talk a lot of salt with that tale of woe. So I'm rather relieved to read Marvel's side, which isn't to say they're innocent...

Hi Café member Eimear! You have yourself a new reader. I studied abroad in Helsinki and absolutely loved Finnish, though was glad for everything also being in Swedish which was much easier to sight-read. (If only I'd spoken German back then...) It was a maddening but fascinating language to try to learn, so I hope you have fun with it. I'm sure I'll have fun reading along.

Hi Sam! Thank you so much for these posts, I always learn so much more about the world and what's going on in it.

Would you mind doing a signal boost for me? The Moonridge Animal Park (http://moonridgezoo.org/), sponsored by Garett Maggart -- the character Blair from the late-nineties show 'The Sentinel' -- is the beneficiary of a fan-run online auction each year to help with the costs of running and maintaining the zoo. Each year, fans auction their work, not necessarily fic, to other fans and donate the proceeds. This year the auction begins in about six weeks and items-to-be-auctioned is waaaay down. Any and all boosting would be greatly appreciated. Links and FAQs and a history of how this got started is here: http://gmfor-moonridge.livejournal.com/15514.html#cutid1

Thanks!

ETA: My word choice, it is sometimes teh suck.

Okay, deep breath...

I asked about some help for a friend of mine, but that was much easier than what I'm about to do. I really hate to ask, but could you possibly, um, maybe post a link to my KickStarter?

I'm trying to KickStart a fantasy series that I've been writing for the last nine years. There's a lengthy sample (44 pages) up on the KickStarter page, as well as a detailed description of where each dollar will go. But, basically, if enough people each pledge $5, then all of the people who pledged $5 will get the entire book series in ebook AND audiobook format, as well as a character and world guide. Higher pledges can get back story snippets of their favorite characters.

Here's the link: http://kck.st/KnABoM

In case it matters, I'm very much supportive of fanart, fanfiction, and other awesome parts of fandom. I don't know whether that makes a difference or not, though, haha.

Ohh, jeeze, it's so hard hitting submit on this comment. Agh. I'm really sorry to ask.

(Also, I haven't heard any updates about my friend's situation, or I'd let you know. I'm hoping that she'll find a job soon.)

No problem. You're not by far the only person linking to their own kickstarter, not a big deal. :) I will RFM.

Yeah, but that's...other people. I love reading about other people's KickStarters (I actually pledged for Wollstonecraft, and I'm rather excited that I'm going to be getting two ebooks out of the deal), but it's difficult to take the plunge and advertise for myself, you know?

Still, since I want to be self-published, it's something I have to get used to. Thank you so much for RFM. It's the only reason that I go on LJ any more.

Hey! Just thought I'd give you an update--my KickStarter just funded! At least one pledge came from LJ, so thank you!

...I'm actually kind of in shock. Neil Gaiman himself signal boosted my KickStarter on Twitter. I'm almost scared to fall asleep--I might wake up to find that it never happened at all.

Thank you! I'm still kind of reeling in shock. I'm also trying to get everything prepped. Man, life is crazy. (Also, good luck with Dead Isle!)

Thanks for the signal boost, Sam - I got some views in the past 48 hours than in the whole of March, and I have met a really nice American ex-pat living in Kuopio because of this! She's already given me some fantastic advice on fitting in. -Eimear

I have posted Found Dog alert to Oliver's list and Patrick's Pantry. Hopefully someone will know someone.

Oh, the Great Pyrenees from last week - some, who wanted to remain anon, from here put me onto a rescuer. In the meantime, another rescue stepped up and got him. But thanks to you and that first person, he had more hope. Sadly, he died 48hrs after his surgery of heart failure. Thanks so much for posting that, tough.
