Mum sent me a package.

YOU KNOW IT'S THAT TIME

Inside was:

A full issue of the sunday comics, neatly folded
An entire issue of the sunday coupons section of the paper
A valentine's day card with five dollars inside
A box of Pocky
A box of "cranberry frogs" which are like normal "frogs" (pecans and caramel covered in chocolate) except with cranberries in
A pad of post-it notes
A packet of pork gravy mix
An ad for "sticky toffee cheese"
And an Ikea ad, which was nice, except it's like I'm being taunted with how I will never own a nice couch.

People have suggested that the randomness of these packages hides some kind of secret message, but if it does, it's beyond me. I love her packages, I just very rarely understand them.

well, you can start saving for that couch with the five dollars in the valentine card...
enjoy the food and the comics

...an Austin paper, or a Chicago paper? (I can't decide which would be odder. Except one of each, maybe. *g*)

My thoughts exactly!

From: [identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com
LOL, Austin. I think Chicago paper would have been significantly stranger (but marginally more useful).

Sticky...toffee...cheese.

I'm confused by this concept.

I am prepared to try it.

In the name of science, of course.

My first thought was brunost (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brunost), which isn't actually bad, or that weird, by Scandinavian standards.

eta: just googled it, I think I'll stick to brunost...

There is (in certain parts of Texas and allegedly Great Britain) a thing called "Sticky Toffee Pudding", and that is something you want to eat.

The cheese is not that thing. (I didn't find it particularly enjoyable, but I am confused by sweet cheeses and sticky toffee pudding is available here.)

I'm convinced your mother is some kind of savant, but I don't know what her exact genius is, beyond being really quite fantastic and a complete care-package mystery.

I always check ahead for tote bags. I miss the tote bags!

We should all send Sam a tote.

I have only ever heard the deliciously addictive pecan-caramel-chocolate things called 'turtles.'

Date: 2012-07-18 07:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com
They have tons of names -- frogs, turtles, in Texas they're Millionaires, Walgreens sells them as "pots of gold"...

Cranberry versions are apparently known as "bog frogs". :D

From: [identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com
Haha! That is an excuse to change one's personal vocabulary, right there ... though I suppose 'bog turtles' also works ... even if it sounds like it could be a toilet cleaning product.

Walgreens; it's like Wal-Mart for fancy people.

Chicago is chock-a-block with them -- the joke is "I'm lost! There's a Walgreens on the corner and a Money Store across the street!" "Good luck."

They're just not particularly fancy. Not nearly as fancy as some Wal-Marts I've been in. :D

I haven't been reading your LJ long enough, apparently, because I only noticed the "things my mum has sent me" tag today. So I clicked on it, and I have now read 30+ "things my mum has sent me" entries, and all I can say is:

WOW.

Actually, that's not quite all. You have some mom. She appears to have her own kind of logic that differs from other people's, but that keeps life interesting, right?

Date: 2012-07-19 01:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com
Yeah, Mum has a vivid imagination when it comes to composing packages :D

I think my mom could give your mom a run for her money in the randomness department, but she's never sent me ads before. Mostly it's extremely tacky knitted items, or stuff she's found in a yard sale. I could tell you stories about Santa Claus mugs....

Sticky toffee cheese....yum. My grocer's get it in sometimes and it's amazing.
But...post it notes?

I've been playing a lot of hidden object games on Shockwave lately. Your mom's boxes sound a lot better than some of the item lists I'm supposed to find.

Protip: Nobody understands the logic of their mothers.

I garuntee that she has clearly logical well-laid out reasons for each and every object and will be sad that you do not understand these. After all, you said you liked pork gravy mix eight years ago during that tornado in the middle of the night while you were sleepwalking.

Date: 2012-07-19 01:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com
I can guarantee you the logic behind the pork gravy was "Well, you can't have chicken anymore!"

She will never examine why she thinks I would need gravy, she just assumes I do.
