It's Sunday, and time for Sam's Three Things About Doctor Who!

I think I missed doing this for A Town Called Mercy. Er, sorry.

Spoilers for 704, The Power Of Threesomes

1. BRIGADIER JUNIOR. OH MY HEART. She's clever and sciencey and the BRIGADIER'S KID. He was my favourite. Can we keep her? Please? It's about time the Doctor got stranded on Earth again for a while.

2. I'm sorry, if cubes randomly appeared all over one day, I would not put them in my silverware drawer (not that I have one, I keep mine in a cup on the counter). Though I could totally see people of a certain mind hoarding them.

3. You will note that the Doctor took them to a swanky hotel for their wedding anniversary and then...apparently stuck around long enough for Adventures To Be Had. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'. THE POWER OF THREE. (Also a nice nod to magical numbers, seven versus three.)

3a. I love Dad Pond. Dad Pond wins every episode he is in by virtue of being DAD POND.

1. YES! That made me so very happy, I love the Brigadier so much, this was the best thing :D

2. Keep in mind that the cubes ended up around for over a year. When something strange shows up but does not do anything. They become a background item fter a while, just something you have to simply work around every minute and don't give a second thought to. Until they start doing shit.

I'm actually really concerned now that the Ponds are all 'we're stronger together' again because now I'm afraid something horribly tragic is going to happen next week with the freaking angels...

Also, Daddy Pond rocks. Agreed. Love how he's just all in it now that he's had a taste.

Oh yeah -- that was totally the point of them, I know -- but at the same time, they're not glued in place. I handwaved it as Doctor Whoism that they didn't get swept up and thrown out, because how long would you leave a shit-ton of mysterious boxes on the sidewalk for people to trip over, but the ones in the silverware and such seemed a little over the top. :D

I can't help but compare the cubes to the snow globes in Terry Pratchett's "Reaper Man". If you go by what the show says, they have the same goals - to slowly infiltrate everywhere. But cubes don't work for me like the snow globes did - they popped up everywhere all at once instead of sneaking in (well, it's TV, hard to do a slow build there); there's nothing particularly interesting about a cube that would make people want to keep them; and they stuck around too long - I thrive on clutter but even I'd have tossed them long before they activated. I can't see a hospital wasting storage space by keeping them in bins.

If there was something about them that made people keep them, they didn't do a good job of showing it - sure, they had thousands of Twitter accounts 24 hours later but that's Twitter. Now, thousands of active Twitter accounts months later, that would've ramped up the creepy factor.

However if the actual goal of the cubes was to drive the Doctor loopy by being absolutely baffling, they succeeded. That was my theory for the first half of the show.

I figure Stewart was there to emphasize that the Companions tend to survive to die of old age. But the former Companion they chose was made of awesome and now they have to keep her. I HAVE SO DECREED!Wait, I'm not in charge, but I'm still right.

I notice Amy's parents are missing. It's probably coincidence but with Moffat you can never be sure. And Dad Pond nee Williams is so much more interesting anyway.

Amy's parents are dead, aren't they7 And her aunt sent her to psychiatrists about the whole Doctor thing, so I suspect they're not close.

I think they're alive again now after the Doctor rebooted the universe.

At the end of "Big Bang" (close of Smith's first season) the universe was reset and she got her parents back in time for her wedding. Her "wee little dad," she called him.

They haven't been seen or heard from since. Which I don't much mind, seeing as how Rory's dad is awesome and a Weasley.

Dad Pond was the rarest of [occasional] Companions... one who does as he's told !

And yes, please SO want to keep Kate, and it's about time UNIT got back to it's original roots.

Oh... he keeps his silverware in a cup on the counter! I thought he kept his cube in a cup on the counter. I need more sleep.

Overall, a nice sweet little episode before the angels of doom next week. I LOVED LOVED LOVED Kate and who she was - that made me come closer to crying than anything on DW in ages, and I came close again when the Doctor reminisced about Amy being the first face "this face" had seen. Then the fact that the guest stars were Jemma Redgrave and Steven Berkoff - oh, and Dad Pond as the icing on the cake. So, overall, I'm feeling very warm and fuzzy about my show, and RIDDEN WITH APPREHENSION about next week.

RE CUBES

The funny thing is, people have already started making paper ones and leaving them places. I saw posts in tumble last night not an hour after it had aired in the US of people photographing the cubes. So if cubes had randomly appeared, I might not have put them in my silverware drawer, but I bet they would have made awesome bookends or decorations.

If those cubes were all the same size they'd have been supporting bookshelves, holding back soil with plants in the intersices and so forth all over the place, here - but they'd also have been trying to do tricks while very firmly glued and super-cemented together.

Amy sort of had a little character growth in this episode! I almost didn't remember that I'm totally sick of her and ready for new companions, like, last season. It did help that Dad Pond and Brig Jr were awesome, though. I was a little disappointed when Amy and Rory went with the Doctor and Dad Pond stayed behind.

The title - especially when Amy said it in the episode - made me laugh a lot, because the Power of Three was a big thing on Charmed.

I *might* (read DID) have squealed embarrassingly loudly the second time someone said "Kate Stewart" and in a flash I figured out where they were going. My friends looked at me oddly, but come on IT'S THE BRIG'S KID!!!!!!

;)

Dad Pond is love!

When he said "Your dad never did" I went OH GOD IS IT and then he said Stewart and I went YES!
