Good morning all, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

[livejournal.com profile] darksideofstorm linked to an article about a gay couple in Texas, Joshua Harrison and Jeremy Jeffers, who have been on the receiving end of hate speech in their small town and can't afford to leave it. There's a new-ish website called Owldolatrous that further documented the harassment and is raising money to help them with a rent down payment and moving expenses so they can find a safer place to live.

[personal profile] subluxate is raising money for travel to Iowa City in January to see a specialist for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. They're writing drabbles and offering editing services in return for donation, here on Dreamwidth and here on LJ.

[personal profile] highlyeccentric linked to Tom on Tumblr, who is raising money to apply for a visa so he and his partner can move home to Australia where her prospects for medical treatment are better. Their story is here, and their chipin fundraising page is here.

[livejournal.com profile] an_sceal linked to a fundraiser to help pay medical bills for Baby, a service dog who was attacked by feral dogs and seriously injured. Her owner, an artist, is selling amazing works of art at his Facebook to try and cover Baby's bills. Even if you can't afford to buy, check out his art, it's super cool.

Doola linked to a petition to try and stop the destruction of a buried Buddhist city, a significant cultural site in Afghanistan, which is being threatened by a proposed mining operation.

[livejournal.com profile] melayneseahawk linked to an indiegogo fundraiser to help research the potential of a cancer-killing virus currently lacking the funding to be developed. Big Pharma apparently won't fund it because it's in the public domain, so there's no profit to be made from it.

Housing For Fans:

[livejournal.com profile] tesserae_ is looking for a housemate in a historic building in downtown Los Angeles. Private laundry, three cats, and fan friendly; you can email for more info at tesserae4405 at yahoo.com.

Just For Fun:

[livejournal.com profile] mycatsellsclues linked to an awesome tumblr called What Should We Call Art History, which I think any scholar or lover of art will enjoy. I know I did. :D

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.

The Facebook link for the artist helping a service dog doesn't work for me -- I get "The page you requested cannot be displayed right now. It may be temporarily unavailable, the link you clicked on may have expired, or you may not have permission to view this page."

I suspect it may be overloaded. It worked for me fine yesterday, and I'm not logged in or anything. Perhaps try again in a bit?

I can't get to the indiegogo page, either. RFM is the world's most helpful DOS attack.

This article is about the attack on the service dog, and includes an email address to contact Dennis, her owner. (Caution, also contains a picture of a severely injured dog.) http://www.kpho.com/story/19904577/maricopa-mans-service-animal-clinging-to-life-after-9-dog-attack#.UIhCR2iPJ_C.facebook

Thanks for taking a look. :)

That cancer-killing virus story makes me so angry, you don't even know. Worse still because I've heard the echoes of it a thousand times over. I don't know how much research has stalled through lack of funding. Contrast: The Avengers made $1.5bn. Avatar cost $500 million, the NYT estimates. I love fandom; I am of fandom; I understand what it is to love a work, and wish its creators well; but there are days when this collective choice of ours sends me spiralling into an utterly impotent rage.

ETA: took a breather, cooled off a bit, wanted to come back to say--I know it's not entirely fair to expect people to forego small little pleasures like a movie ticket, or a DVD, and I know fandom does contribute to things like this. I also know I'm biased as hell (hello, future oncologist speaking). I just...I just wish that sometimes this species had different priorities, is all. A bit less blue catgirl, a bit more science.

Just for fun, reminded me of the relationship between Dalek Can and Dalek Suck.
