Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

[personal profile] zana16 linked to a fundraiser for a friend who will have to pay $18K out of pocket for a new electric wheelchair. Zana16 is writing fic for people who donate more than $50; you can read more and find the link to donate here.

[livejournal.com profile] deepfishy linked to a campaign to fund a short story anthology of contemporary YA SF/F with diverse ("QUILTBAG, neuro-diverse, disabled, non-Western culture, people of color") teen protagonists. They already have several well-known pro names on board and have opened submissions to all; you can support the campaign here and check out submission guidelines here.

Housing:

Thad's coworker is selling a house in Port Orange, Florida; she has a serious illness and can no longer keep up a house of that size. The house is 6000 sq. feet on 17 acres in a rural area. Included in the sale are two horses, a 2300 sq. foot barn, and all necessary farm equipment. It is a short drive to Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach. For more information you can contact DayV@daytonastate.edu. The address is 1920 H L Ainsley Drive, Port Orange, FL, 32128.

Just For Fun:

[livejournal.com profile] happi_feet is offering handcrafted TARDIS kitchen linens (a TARDIS dishtowel, dishcloth, scrubbing cloth, and potholder) or bathroom linens (TARDIS hand towel, two face cloths, and a Dalek bath mitt) for $58 each, shipping not included. The linens are 100% cotton and require a $15 supply cost up front. You can email happifeetcrochet@gmail.com to learn more. Happi_feet is also collecting donations of money or materials for chemo hats and baby blankets for women's shelters.

J.J. linked to an "academic and personal exploration of asexuality and the asexual spectrum" available for free on Smashwords: What Do You Mean You're Not Interested in Sex?: American Life and Law from an Asexual Perspective.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!).

Your 'check out submission guidelines here' link doesn't work.

Eep, sorry! I'll have to re-find that link somehow.

QUILTBAG is sort of an unfortunate acronym, isn't it? I mean, I'm all for inclusiveness, but QUILTBAG. It's a very "wait what?" name.

That's kind of what QUILTBAG is about. Basically, you can either have a fairly tidy acronym (like LGBT) or you can have an acronym that tries to include as many people as possible, but you cannot have both. QUILTBAG includes a bunch of stuff that's missing from LGBT (like queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual), it's appropriately silly to reflect the fact that it's inevitably going to get silly when you try to get all those letters in there, it's easy to remember because it spells something, and the thing it spells also happens to be both colorful and a container, which I at least think is appropriate.

(There's also FABGLITTER, which I kind of sneakingly like even though it does not include me (because labels work so badly for me that the only one I lay claim to is 'queer'), because FABGLITTER! But QUILTBAG has actually become fairly common as a mildly tongue-in-cheek way for online folks to replace LGBT with something broader.)

FABGLITTER is pretty, well, fabulous. Though I'm pretty sure the fab part would be misheard a lot as, uh, something less acceptable. :/

At this point it almost seems like it would be easier to say "association for non-traditionally-sexual non-cis-straight folk" and just be done with it. Though I suppose THAT would be a pretty awful acronym too.

Just about every term for non-traditional identities is turning into a sort of unwieldy, difficult to remember mouthful these days. Alas. Maybe we should just call ourselves SHIELD and be done with it...

I also don't mind 'sexual minorities' too much, and while that isn't a great acronym it's a short enough phrase to not need one, but of course the trouble with any of these things is that there's always going to be someone who doesn't like it, always, so yeah. (Maybe I'll just start saying LGBTBBQ. Or maybe I'll just make myself a BLT with guacamole or gouda whenever the subject comes up, yum. I wonder if I could find a picture of that to make an icon with.)

I personally don't mind "alternative" either, because, well, as common as any particular thing is in our circles, it's not the standard in wider society...

But yeah, I also like your "hello I am a delicious sandwich" answer. Mostly because it involves delicious sandwiches.

I like QUILTBAG best, but I remember having a bout of extremely unprofessional giggles over the British NUS LGBT discussion over whether to rename ourselves Gender And Sexual Minorities, or GASM.

...so it was NUS LGBT or GASM? /rimshot

I dunno, I think that one sorta chooses itself.

Well, it'd stay NUS (cos, National Union of Students) but yeah. Tragically they're still LGBT :)
