Man, someone died in the Marathon today. I was annoyed by the crowding on the subway because of it, but that's a whole new level of "fuck the Chicago Marathon".

I learned a lot about Chicago law today, too. Apparently you can't hand out Hallowe'en candy without a permit. It's to protect kids from being poisoned by random insane strangers, I guess, despite there never being a single report anywhere in the US of a stranger poisoning a child with hallowe'en candy (though there have been reports of parents trying this.)

Also, I spoke with Nice Boss today. I told him that I knew the situation was awkward, but I wanted to list him as a reference on my resume. I said that if he didn't think he could give me a good reference I wouldn't put him on, but he said he would.

"Actually," he added, "Even if I wanted to, it's illegal in Chicago to give a bad reference. If you're called about an employee, you can't say anything negative. All they're allowed to ask that you absolutely have to answer is whether you did employ them, whether they were late or absent a lot, and whether they were terminated or quit. Anything else has to be gravy. By law."

Gravy! By law!

Ex-roommate is still here. But he has tidied up all his stuff and moved it into the hallway. And he cleaned, too. And R has been gone since last night. I wonder if I can trade in R for Ex-roommate.

Right now we're watching The Next Iron Chef, and Alton Brown is the best reality tv host ever. At one point he had to remind someone to put his pan down and walk away, and the "These kids today" look on his face was priceless.
