Aug. 20th, 2009 11:31 am(I wrote this today just meaning to LOL about how hopelessly American Americans can sometimes be, and then it turned into Ode On A Western Bento. Sorry about that.)
This morning I stumbled across an ad for the Goodbyn lunchbox, a plastic compartment-filled lunchbox that looks, on paper, truly cool, like a cartoon'd up version of a bento box, complete with stickers kids can decorate it with.
Then I looked a little closer, especially at the size of it, and realised that this company has, in fact, taken every useful thing about bento boxes -- compact size, internal capacity, and ease of cleaning -- and ruthlessly discarded it. It's about the same capacity as a three-tier bento but about twice the size of one, and if you look at the teeny tiny compartments you can see where cleaning becomes an issue.
( Learning to bento... )
I'm sure the Goodbyn can carry a filling meal, and I do like the built-in thermos box, but on the other hand for the $35 they want to charge for it you could get two bento boxes. They'll take up the same room as one Goodbyn, and you probably will have enough cash left over for some awesome stickers :D
In short: I AM FOR BENTOS, even if I drastically misuse them at times. :D
