Good morning, Blogland! Bit of a signal boost and something I hadn't thought about in re this whole WTF VOLCANOES thing going on --

[livejournal.com profile] rm is stranded in London until Wednesday at least due to the volcano ash, and she and her partner Patty need a place to stay. I can vouch for them being Good Peoples. :) Her contact info is in the linked post.

On that note, as we do in times of crisis -- if you are stranded at the moment because of the ash and need a place to stay, drop a comment, yeah? If you are local to areas affected by the ash and have a spare room or a sofa and are so inclined, check the comments and see if you can help out or leave a comment of your own. You never know, the cafe is large and contains multitudes. :)
So, I came home from work last night and promptly fell asleep, resulting in the fact that I have slept eleven of the past twelve hours. I can't remember the last time I slept eleven hours in such a short amount of time. Anyway, during the Epic Sleep, Gareth David-Lloyd namedropped me at a con in Australia.

Seriously, wait, what?

[livejournal.com profile] misswinterhill and [livejournal.com profile] cassie_lee, MY SPIES ON THE INSIDE, let me know that apparently the LOLcat fic made an impression on him, and he mentioned it positively in conjunction with a discussion of fanfic. I am amused and pleased too, of course. Thank you, Mr. David-Lloyd, for the publicity! In return I am happy to report I actually quite enjoyed The Fergal.

...it'd be wrong to go back to sleep now, wouldn't it?
It's Saturday afternoon -- must be time for Sam's Three Things!

Spoilers for Doctor Who, episode 5.03: Victory Of The Daleks )

3a. I did my undergraduate thesis on documentary theatre, and one of the elements I talked about extensively was how to portray historical figures in a way that allowed the audience to see both the figure represented and the actor without too much dissonance. It's a tricky thing to get right, because our interior visual is so set on images we've seen of the Real Thing that we're uncomfortable accepting something that's almost-but-not-quite. I think the show did really well here not to go with a precise resemblance, and just to let the actor carry the burden of portrayal. We're much more likely to accept the signifier as the signified if we aren't forced to nitpick precisely what's wrong with it. So job well done there.

And, as soon as I finish coding, Three Things About Classic Who: Series Two will be coming atcha!
Welcome to Sam's Obsessive-Compulsive Three Things. :D Every week, taking you back to a "new" series of Classic Who, to examine what's changed, what hasn't, and what's still lolarious forty-five years later.

This is a large post and somewhat image-heavy, fair warning.
