Jan. 17th, 2011 09:40 amGood morning all, and happy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day! I hope those of you who have the day off (like me) are enjoying it. My undergrad used to do the "Day On" instead. I admit I'm not being terribly active today, but I do have a Radio Free Monday for you!
Ways To Help:
There is a Help Brazil Comm! Offer services, bid on others, and help support flood-devastated areas in the process.

girlpearl, a bill has been introduced that will drastically cut federal funding to PBS and NPR -- Shakespeare's Sister has more on how you can contact your congress representatives and make your voice heard to protect public broadcasting.
oldstarnewshine linked me to a call for help for a trans kid who's looking for housing and a little leg up in the Chicago area.
whatawaytoburn is asking for donations and offering commissions to get out of a bad home situation -- you can find details here.
News To Be Aware Of:
amberdiceless linked me to this back in December and I misfiled the link -- important information especially for Statesiders about the renewed dangers of asbestos insulation.

dhobikikutti, Leslie Feinberg writes at Questioning Transphobia to discuss the appropriation of her trans experience by a relative for a YA novel; Catherine Ryan Hyde's response is here. It's difficult to discern where to stand in this fight, which is clearly not just political but also familial; this is one of those moments where reading critically and deciding for yourself gets a good workout. And if you work in the literary field, particularly in YA publishing, it's good information to have.
snufflesdbear linked me to an article on fake flood-donation scams in Australia -- remember to research where you give before you give. Some common scams are linked at the page.
Via Tudor Rose, Westboro Baptist Church are some of the most repulsive people in the US, but at least they didn't picket the funeral of a nine year old girl this past weekend waving placards about abortion and homosexuality. They were bribed with radio time today instead. I'm sure they drooled at the thought.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. :) You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com (PMs are kind of a bad way to reach me; email or comments are much preferable). If you're not sure how best to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help.
