Aug. 13th, 2011 01:34 pmI went up to a leather repair place this morning to get my jacket refurbished for winter. It was quite the experience, not least because the repair place is in the bottom floor of a condo building, next to a bakery, and the entire place smelled like leather and croissants.
Also I kept petting my jacket as I showed the guy behind the counter where the rips and bare spots were. Finally he looked at me very carefully and said "It's okay. We'll take really good care of it" like I was leaving my dog with him. From the way he said it I can't imagine I'm the first person he's had to reassure.
That jacket is my pride and joy. I got it two years ago on some kind of absurd sale; it's going to cost roughly twice what I paid for it to get it reconditioned, but I don't think I could find another jacket in the style I like, that looks so good on me, for the same amount.
I have kind of a thing about coats. I probably own more coats than I do shirts.
After that I went down to the Art Institute for a bit, to check out a Toulouse-Lautrec tambourine I'd read about in some journal. When I looked at the tambourine close-up I could tell he was all kinds of frustrated with it; he must have been like I KNOW. AN AWESOME CIRCUS PAINTING ON A TAMBOURINE! which is admittedly a pretty great idea, but the problem is that tambourines generally have some kind of animal skin stretched across them rather than canvas. Animal skin obviously does not take oil paints well. His frustration with being unable to get the paint to stay on the god damned tambourine is clearly evident, as is the point at which he probably just said fuck it and did what he could with what he had.
It's a pretty awesome tambourine, though.
I also happened also to discover a new acquisition of the museum, the Oscar Wilde Teapot. It's tragic and hilarious at the same time. I don't think you can actually make tea in it, but I'd love to see a demonstration.
I was going to take the New Member Orientation tour, but as I was the only person there I decided I'd rather not, and instead went and hung out with the Dutch Masters for a while.

Aug. 13th, 2011 06:01 pmTHE COMPUTERS ARE TAKING OVER.
I have spent most of the afternoon trying to troubleshoot a scroll issue in gmail (unsuccessful, but gmail help forums assure me I am not alone) and the issue of Firefox not allowing me to hit "enter" in order to load websites.
Turns out that second problem was being caused by my antivirus program's "linkscanner" function. Well done, AVG. Just in case that kicked in due to a keylogger or something, I'm running a second scan with Ad Aware.
I don't think I mentioned this on the blog, but my corporate iPhone (I KNOW) arrived this past week. One of the IT guys called me and said, "I have an iPhone for you! Do you need to migrate a BlackBerry to it or can we start it up?"
I told him he might want to talk to Overboss first, and he said "Why?" and I lowered my voice and said, very small, "I don't have the job that phone goes with yet."
I got a long Ohhhhhhh and he said he'd talk to Overboss.
Soon I will have two smartphones. (Two.) This seems like overkill, but it's true I'd rather not have my business apps on the same phone I use to post pictures of weird shit I find underground to my blog.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of being BossBoss. Not doing the job so much as the whole...gestalt, I suppose. I've written so much about him and my interactions with him over the last few years, and now I'm poised to see things from the other side. It's just strange.
