Sep. 5th, 2011 09:07 amOh man, did I epic fail to prep RFM ahead of time for this week. LIGHTNING ROUND HERE I COME
A few of you who sent me RFM items or with whom I discussed RFMing something may notice your item is absent -- I've set aside some (non-urgent only!) for next week, when there's a little less attention on hurricanes. :)
Special Feature: Hurricane Irene
priscellie reminds us that if you overbought emergency supplies for the hurricane, local food banks like Foodbanknyc would love to have your donations.
Catherine links to GrowNYC, which sponsors Greenmarkets in New York and has set up a hurricane relief fund for farmers affected by the extensive flooding in the Hudson valley. As she says, "They'll take anything but $50 or more will get you a very pretty herb or squash poster."
a_c_fiorucci shares a post on helping Vermont in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
madripoor_rose has a link to a blog and donation site to support small libraries in Vermont and New York who lost their entire childrens' book collections in the flooding.
Ellen wrote to let me know about Frost Valley YMCA Camp, a historic Catskills camp currently cut off from the outside world by Hurricane Irene but sharing food and facilities with locals in the area. At least one of the camp's buildings has been destroyed, and the damage has yet to be fully assessed. There's a fundraising site here to help rebuild the camp.
Ways To Give:
iamshadow reminded me that Illinois Valley Cat Taxi, which recently helped rescue an animal hoarder's cats, is having their three year anniversary. They're asking for $3 donations to help continue and expand their work. She added that there's also an awesome feel-good story at the site about Boss Hogg, an aggressive tomcat who has been gentled and even trained to apologise when he lashes out.
News To Know:
aughoti is giving away free stuff! Books, manga, comics, and fannish things, to clear out some much-needed space. Check out her ongoing list of stuff you can claim!
Reesa (a longtime cafe member) and her partner have just published The Slipstream Con, a space opera caper novel: "If you like con artists, bounty hunters, nanotechnology, interstellar conspiracies, ill-advised but irresistible polyamory, space operas, or heart-shaped pancakes, this story has something to offer you." It's available in ebook now, and will be available in Hardback in March 2012. And frankly it looks awesome.
marinelle24 links to a fascinating article on an art forgery trial going on in Germany just now.
Just For Fun:
Cadee sent me The Dalek Game, and I about died laughing. The drawings totally make it.
redstapler shares Lifehacker's Bacon Hacks. I can't recommend the bacon-fat candle as anything other than a good way to set your house on fire, but oh my god, bacon-fat popcorn? This has been missing from my life.
autographedcat shares "Never To Be Published Coffee Table Books".
51stcenturyfox found some amazing "vintage geek" ads.
Two AI chatbots were recently hooked up to speak with one another. Actually, one might be a unicorn, apparently there's some debate.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help. Remember, non-embedded links are love.
