Sep. 7th, 2011 07:16 pmDuring a recent conversation -- and it says something about me, probably, that these are the conversations I have -- I came across an interesting fact: neither I nor anyone I spoke to can think of a fairy tale or nursery rhyme that involves fire in a significant way.
Now, we did come up with two exceptions:
* The nursery rhyme "Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home; your house is on fire, your children will burn" which doesn't actually rhyme, something that bothered me at the tender age of four much more than burning children did, and
* The bit in Hansel and Gretel where the witch (SPOILER) gets kicked into the oven.
Neither of which really satisfy, as far as infernos go.
I mean, I can think of ice queens, magic fish, frog princes and so forth, but there's just not a lot of fire in child-oriented folk media. So I thought I would throw wide the gates of the Cafe and see if any of you guys can come up with anything. Especially since some of you are bound to have experience outside of the fairly limited scope of Hans Christian Anderson - Brothers Grimm - Mother Goose stuff that I'm rooted in.
