Jun. 18th, 2012 08:06 amGood morning everyone! It's Radio Free Monday time!
Ways to Give:
missysedai is riding in the Reeves Northrup Memorial Bike to the Bay to raise funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She's been in training for the two-day, hundred mile course despite having a chronic illness herself; you can read her blog about it, ahd her fundraising page is here.
Anna let me know that the Greater Chicago Food Depository's about to have its annual hunger walk. She works for my particular local, the Irving Park Food Pantry; their budget was cut by about 50% from two years back and things are getting pretty thin. You can support the Irving Park Food Pantry here or learn more about Hunger Walk here.
The Accidental Shakespeare Company in Chicago is raising money for their 2012-2013 season. I know some of the folks working on this and they're hardworking, dedicated artists who could use a boost. The project is funded, but you can never have too much money in the theatre. Plus, ALCHEMY PUNK TEMPEST.
If you've been frustrated lately by slowness or failure to load over at AO3, due to an influx of writers from FFN (who just began re-inforcing their "no smut" policy) there's a great way to help: support the OTW so they can buy newer, faster, or more servers to keep up with the load!
Give For Free:
Elizabeth and
cryptolect both linked me to Robert Rummel-Hudson, a writer who is trying to move to Chicago in order to give his daughter a more independent life than she can have in a Texas suburb (don't I know how that goes). His daughter has special needs, and the public transit system in Chicago would be a big help allowing her to be independent. You can read his blog here about trying to find a job and the challenges he's facing.
Anon let me know that Long Island Crisis Center, the only youth shelter provider on Long Island, is in danger of losing its funding. The vote is today, and they've had good luck with email and telephone campaigns before; there's more info here about what's happening and who to contact.
melannen let me know that Interrobang Studios, run by
kyabetsu and
kevinbolkart, is looking to expand into a full-time business through a grant from Mission Small Business. They need votes from facebook accounts to make it to the finals, and any votes would help! Kevin has drawn a comic explaining things in more detail, but basically they're asking folks to go to Mission Small Business, login via facebook, and vote for Interrobang Studios.
brainwane let me know that Cafe members who like copyediting can work on cleaning up old texts at Wikisource, where there's a "Proofread of the Month" collaboration. This month's book is "Twilight" -- but not that one! It's from 1916 and it's by Julia Frankau.
Fans Helping Fans:
seascribe is moving to Lexington, KY for post-grad this fall and looking for fan-friendly roommates or advice on finding a place to live. She has more info here.
oriolegirl is looking for housing for a year in Philadelphia; she's looking for housing close to public transit and cat-friendly. She has more info here.
lawsontl is helping a friend find a home for two cats, preferably together; Libby and Precious are spayed, have all their shots, have been front-declawed, and have socialized with dogs before. They can be adopted in the SW Ohio area.
Just For Fun:
wandererriha linked to how to kiss, which is both funny and educational!
Remember my encounter with the Mikes on Bikes?
carmy_w linked to an article where you can see what they looked like -- though our Mikes looked significantly happier and less chiseled.
@01_gav on Twitter linked me to Facts About Wheel Of Fortune. I believe Pat Sajak DOES create free wifi wherever he goes.
I was skeptical about the Russian Sherlock Holmes parody. I was a fool.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.
