Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

I missed this last week so top billing this week: [livejournal.com profile] celtic_maenad linked to a fundraiser for a project her spouse and a few other graduates of DAVE School have been collaborating on; they're working on their first full-length, live-action feature film. Their kickstarter is here, and they have a facebook here; the movie "is about a man who uses a mystic journal to alter the world around him to try to keep the balance of the universe." It sounds awesome.

[livejournal.com profile] fiveforsilver linked to Cinerisstrange on Tumblr, who has recently become homeless. She's selling fannish wristbands (you can see them here) and asking for donation help here.

[livejournal.com profile] adelheide has had a debt come rather suddenly due and needs to get it repaid befor the holidays. She's selling jewelery and other shiny things to raise money for the repayment.

[livejournal.com profile] iamshadow linked to a friend who is fostering a young abandoned kitten they're trying to get spayed so they can rehome her more easily. More info and a fundraising links are here.

[livejournal.com profile] longstrider linked to the esteemed [livejournal.com profile] jimhines, who is re-creating comic book cover poses in the name of a fundraiser for the Aicardi Syndrome Foundation.

[livejournal.com profile] parcae linked to an indiegogo fundraiser for the prototyping and production of a glass which changes colour when date-rape drugs are added to it, developed by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. They've only got $18k of their $50k goal and could use a boost!

[personal profile] carmillamurray has just launched a kickstarter for a documentary film about an improvisational musical ensemble based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. There's video and music samples at the kickstarter page and you can read more at their dedicated tumblr.

Help For Free:

[personal profile] subluxate linked to a Whitehouse.gov petition to have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome recognized as a potentially disabling illness by the Social Security Administration. EDS has many effects on health, from scarring to aortic dissection.

DirtyDirtyChai asked me to give everyone a heads-up that the Dead Isle podfic project is still moving forward, and they're going to be posting actively again soon, in specific asking for sound checks from everyone who intends to audition. I should have more info next week, this is just a little pre-announcement. :)

Just For Fun:

[personal profile] thaccian let me know that the fantastic photos I linked to last week of coyotes in Wrigleyville were taken by photographer Will Byington. His website's down at the moment but you can check him out here on Instagram.

[livejournal.com profile] supergreak linked to a very catchy fannish song, A Musical Tribute To Fanfic Cliches by halffizzbin.

HelloTailor on Tumblr is firing up an online book club for people interested in reading Jonathan Strange And Mr. Norrell.

COmtnLady linked to an awesome slideshow of steampunk art made from ocean trash.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.
I feel a great sensation of satisfaction these days when I actually finish a book, even if it's only 114 pages.

Actually, Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi is a fantastic book, so there's a lot crammed into those hundred and fourteen pages.

I came across the title ages ago on a list of Six Egyptian Writers You Don't Know But Should, and I finally sourced a copy at the library. It's a relatively simple story: the life of Firdaus, a peasant's daughter raised in extreme poverty, who we first meet when she's in prison for murder and facing the death penalty.

It's an engaging story... )

Final Verdict: Woman At Point Zero is a great book; a fast read, and well worth the time to read deliberately and explore.
