I'm always intrigued by what fanfic of mine draws a response from readers. There's the LOLcat of course, which will probably referenced on my tombstone ("Here lies Sam. We haz him nao.") and there was the Doc File Of J Alfred Prufrock, though that's less fanfic and more "oh, Sam, no".

Exclusive got more response than I was expecting, to be honest, and more than I generally do. Mainly, I think, I was surprised because I was so personally obsessed with it, and I find that it helps keep perspective if you remind yourself that just because you love something doesn't mean everyone else will, especially when you made the thing. But what struck a chord in the work for me seemed to strike a chord with people reading it as well.

I mean, I basically wrote the entire thing so I could write the twist ending, which is what I got the most commentary on. But the other parts that I worked particularly hard at -- things like the conversation about Spider-man, the ambiguous gender of the narrator, and the interview with Hulk -- are also things that got mentioned frequently. Which, I don't know if I can extract any kind of greater meaning or lesson from it, but it was pleasant to see happen. I...expended a lot of energy on that fic, more than I have in a really long time, and got to that lost-in-the-work place where even a few days later I still keep thinking I should get back to working on it, and when I remember it's done, I self-destructively think about doing a sequel.

In other news, I'm still applying for jobs; I am not averaging one a day anymore, because I've become pickier about "Am I willing to move there?" and "Am I willing to do that job in order to move there?" which seemed logical to engage in after the Philadelphia Freakout. Still, I've managed to keep my one-in-five average; of the thirty jobs I've applied for, I've had six interviews, including one coming up on Monday.

Sadly, I never heard back from the Museum of Hot Mess. I wouldn't have taken the job, but it does sting just a tiny bit to be rejected by a hot mess like them.
