Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways to Give:

[livejournal.com profile] longstrider's friend, [livejournal.com profile] chadu, is currently in financial distress. He writes roleplaying games and books as Atomic Sock Monkey Press, and any purchases made there help him out!

Anya linked to a friend who is cartooning to raise money for homeless kids. His cartoons are a little twisty and a lot awesome!

[livejournal.com profile] ysabet linked to an indiegogo for donations to the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan; the twist with this is that donations will be matched to purchase water-filtration systems called Lifestraws. The original vendor, Eartheasy, also has a buy-one-and-we'll-send-one thing going.

[livejournal.com profile] snufflesdbear linked to Dreamspinner and Harmony Ink Press, which are building a library for the teens and young adults at the Lost-N-Found center in Atlanta, Georgia, which works to help get runaway LGBT youth off the street.

[livejournal.com profile] onebrightroad linked to Food For Thought Books in Amherst, MA, which is facing the likelihood of closing after 37 years of serving the Pioneer Valley community, largely because of the burden of debt from a massive drop in textbook sales in recent years. They're running an IndieGoGo campaign to pay off their debt and enable them to downsize the store.

[livejournal.com profile] editrx's fundraiser for Star Cat Books bookstore is only a little over halfway to its goal with five days left to go. They are offering books signed by Neil Gaiman or Jane Yolen as donation perks at the $500 level; they have ten available. This is a great chance to support a burgeoning small business! You can read more here or donate to the fundraiser here.

Buy Stuff, Help Out:

[livejournal.com profile] iamshadow have hand-knit goods for sale, and are also taking knitting commissions. Check out their stuff here at Dreamwidth, here at LJ, and here at Etsy. Purchasing for-sale items or commissions "allow us to buy ourselves luxury items like dvds or books, or knitting supplies for more saleable items".

[livejournal.com profile] akatonbo's father has a brand new Etsy store for his nature photography notecard business, Beddes Images. He takes all the photos and assembles all the cards, and provides detailed information about each photo -- not just 'Butterfly on a Flower' but 'Giant Swallowtail Butterfly, Naumkeag, Stockbridge, MA'. Ships to the US and Canada, and right now there's a 15% discount code in the store info.

News To Know:

Anon linked to a tumblr post about concerns over Big Bang Press, which I linked to two weeks ago. At the post there is very little concrete information in the top sections (which are also somewhat tough to read) so I recommend backtracking by clicking the name of the person who made the bit of the post you want to see, to get more info.

Just For Fun:

[livejournal.com profile] caffeinekitty linked to A 40th Anniversary/Lifetime Achievement commemoration Worldwide Readathon of Susan Cooper's classic fantasy series "The Dark is Rising Sequence", which began on Saturday. Details and sign up locations are here.

[livejournal.com profile] lots42 linked to a site, horsehockey.com, which I'm still not sure the function of but appears to be a collaborative writing project. Check it out, it looks pretty cool (if mysterious :D).

Anon is currently writing a thesis on humor in English comic songs. They're requesting links to songs or song titles here. (I assume by English they mean English-language, not strictly songs produced in England.)

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!).
I am back at work today! In our new location, which I hate. Smaller cubicles, ugly building, bad part of town, longer commute, what's not to love.

But then I opened my health insurance website and saw the statement of how much my surgery would have cost without insurance.

This plus a couple of other charges (pre-consults, blood labs, pathology, etc) means that having a robot rip the gallbladder from my body would otherwise have cost me about $45K.

So, you know. When people ask how I like the new place, I say "It's very nice!" and think about my gallbladder.
