Feb. 10th, 2014 07:20 amGood morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!
Ways To Give:
mayfairmoon's best friend is attempting to move her (large) family across state in a limited time frame due to some issues with her abusive ex-husband and a desire to provide better schools for her eight kids. She's had a lot of health-related misfortune lately and doesn't have the money to pay for the move. You can read more and donate at her GoFundMe page which also has information on local fundraising events in the Bradford, PA area.
bookblather linked to
sharpeningthebones, who has secured a place to move to, but needs some help funding the move within the time-frame they have. You can read more and donate here.
beathen linked to the Carter Wayne Tye Expense and Education Fund, a fundraiser to help a single father raise his newborn after the tragic death of his wife Courtney shortly after giving birth. You can donate at the fundraiser and read more about Courtney here.
akatonbo linked to a fundraiser
pricklylegs is running for their cat Pudge, who needs exploratory surgery for a blockage in her digestive system. You can read more and donate here.
Lorena linked to Pine Grove Elementary, a school located in Delray Beach, Florida in a community of extremely limited means. Close to 98% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches and English is a second language to a majority of these students. They are raising $20K for a school trip to Washington DC for the 5th grade class. You can read more and donate here!
There is an ongoing fundraiser for a Breast Health center in Halifax, Nova Scotia which will offer a holistic approach to breast health, and be a place where people will have access to everything and everyone they need for their care. This is the final year of the Fundraiser, so they're very close to completion. You can read more or support the fundraiser here.
Buy Stuff, Help Out!
kath_ballantyne and
iamshadow are raising money to attend a conference on EDS (a connective tissue disorder that Kath has). You can read more about the conference attendance here and purchase their handcrafts here to help get them to the conference; they also have a commission page.
kate_nepveu linked to Con or Bust which helps fans of color attend SFF cons (she runs it under the umbrella of the not-for-profit Carl Brandon Society). Its annual online auction starts today, and there are lots of amazing items up for offer, including commissioned writing, custom jewelery, signed books, rare books, and ARCs. Come check it out, or offer something for auction yourself -- all types of goods and services are welcome. You can read more at the auction information page here.
Help For Free:
Lorena linked to a news story about Charda Gregory, who went to a party and woke up in a strange, trashed hotel room. Assuming she'd been drugged and assaulted, Gregory called the police, but instead of being treated as a potential rape victim, she was arrested, and then assaulted by one of the officers. You can read more and sign a petition demanding the prosecution of Officer Bernadette Najor here.
tealin linked to a petition run by the World Wildlife Federation to stop an oil exploration project in Africa. Soco, a UK oil company, is attempting to explore for oil inside Virunga in Virunga, Africa's oldest national park, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Virunga is a key source of food and jobs for over 50,000 nearby residents which generates over US$45 million annually. You can read more and sign the petition to stop oil exploration here.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!).
