Aug. 30th, 2015 01:52 pmI believe I may have bought the last bag of Lays Reuben Chips in the entire city of Chicago this morning.
I don't normally eat potato chips, but Lays had this weird promotion going where they introduced four new flavors and you could vote for one of them to win. I guess winning gets you a permanent place alongside BBQ, Salt & Vinegar, Nacho Cheese, and other venerable time-honored chip flavors in the snack shelf pantheon. Lays does seem to be a little more imaginative than other brands, which as far as I can tell have gone for spicier and spicier until at some point in the near future they'll just be selling bags where you open it up and it pepper sprays you.
Anyway, Lays was offering Biscuits & Gravy, Truffle, Gyro, and Reuben flavored potato chips, and I was hoping the Reuben chips would be like the glorious Hot Dog flavored chips I used to be able to get from one single vending machine at grad school. They weren't, but they're like a very mild vinegar-flavored chip, which is fine by me because vinegar chips are usually much too strong.
But it was a promotion, and they haven't said which flavor is the winner yet, so now there are no more reuben chips and I really liked the reuben chips, plus I just semi-accidentally made my body weight in sweet onion dip and they go really well with sweet onion dip. So I've been scouting for anywhere that might still have reuben chips. I happened to find one single bag of them at the Walgreens in Chinatown.
I didn't find the sifter, pizza stone, or pants that I was actually looking for, but reuben chips are a pretty good runner-up prize.
