I've had my own place for many years -- since I was 20, except for a couple of summers in college and the year in Chicago with R, I've always had my own place. But most of the time those places were small, or I was struggling, or both, and even my little eyrie by the graveyard in uptown was...difficult, in some ways.

I've found that since moving to the new place and reorganizing my life a little, I've really enjoyed the rituals of certain holidays, both the decorating and the un-decorating. I have a box of Halloween stuff and a box of Christmas stuff, and I like getting the box down, unpacking and arranging everything inside it, and then packing it back up and putting it away when the holiday is over. And as much as it's also a pain in the ass, I like moving my plants into the solarium every spring and back into the apartment when the weather turns cold.

I think this year I might put together a few more "holiday boxes" -- perhaps a winter one for when Christmas is over (some snowflakes to hang around the fireplace, a blanket for the back of the sofa) and maybe one for the Fourth of July or something. I bet my folks have some old vintage decorations I could steal. It wouldn't be hard to be systematic about it -- I have hooks around the fireplace and a hook on the front door, those would be the only things that really need changing out.

Time to bust out the Crafts Bin and rummage around in it for suitable decoration materials.
