cblj_backupOut of morbid curiousity today, I decided to look up Last Meals online. Mainly, of course, it's what Death Row inmates had for their last meal, which is extremely weird -- they're not allowed a last cigarette, for example, but can have any food that it's possible to arrange for them.
A couple of interesting last meals came up aside from Death Row -- for example, the prehistoric Iceman ( http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/icemummies/iceman.html ) who was found, uh, in some ice somewhere (I didn't promise thoroughness) had eaten unleavened einkorn wheat bread, some form of herb, and a bit of meat, breed indeterminate. Joan of Arc, predictably, took Communion as her last meal. There's even an article out there by a man who has prepared last meals for Death Row inmates. The list of Death Row at the Rotten Library ( http://www.rotten.com/library/death/execution/last-meals/ ) is an interesting one more for the commonalities than the details. Aside from the guy whose last words were that they gave him spaghetti instead of spaghetti-os (hey, I'd be miffed too) and the guy who had a single olive, most of them seem to request very similar dishes -- steak, fried chicken, or fast food; some form of potato; ice cream or some other fairly simple dessert; soda or milk. Comfort foods, pretty clearly. Hot food, starches, foods they're familiar with and not likely to get in prison.
Anyhow, I thought I'd satsify my curiousity fully. If you knew you were eating your last meal -- not necessarily that you were in prison or in any way deprived, just that you were going to die after you ate...

Date: 2008-11-07 12:57 am (UTC)Not but a couple hours after reading this, I was catching up on the game of Mafia that had happened on a message board between the last time I was in he thread and now, and a player who had just been lynched was requesting their last meal. It fit the trend you describe completely. I think the wording "some form of potato" may have been used.
