So Merlin, the TV show, opens like this:

It's spoken aloud very dramatically by John Hurt, who is the voice of the Slash Dragon who's always telling Merlin he and Arthur are destined to be together and other stuff. No, for real.

I laugh at this every time I watch Merlin, and I've finally figured out why I find it so funny other than that it is kind of funny. It's because I'm expecting it to go:

THE PEOPLE ARE REPRESENTED BY TWO SEPARATE BUT EQUALLY IMPORTANT GROUPS:
THE POLICE WHO INVESTIGATE CRIME

THESE ARE THEIR STORIES.

Followed by the Doink Doink. (Not to be confused with the Thing That Goes Doink.)

Given the massive preponderance of AUs in this fandom (not that I disapprove; I happen to be a connoisseur of AUs) I'm sure someone has written it. Or soon will.

The Thing That Goes Doink is the ultimate in tropebombing. Go on. You know you want to click.

Yes, I was aware of the serious subject matter on last week's episode of Law & Order: UK [BBC America], where Junior Crown Prosecutor Alesha (Freema Agyeman) was drugged and raped by her gynecologist.

But still, I had to chuckle when the defendant mentioned on the stand that "she had a thing for doctors."

1) Some people tune in to L&O, not to watch it, but merely to hear the doink doink in the background while they do other things.

I'm one of those 1)'s. While I'm studying I usually have SVU playing in the background.
I can say doink doink at all the appropriate moments without actually paying enough attention to know what's happening in the episode.

I would never confuse The Thing That Goes Doink with The Thing That Would Not Leave (which, as I hoped, led to an Edward Gorey reference), much less the Knights Who Go Ni. I do wonder if it really scares away deer. If my parents still had the house where the deer ate all the apples (which I probably should have capped, but...oh well) I could suggest they get one and try it. Certainly nothing else ever worked.

I spent last week playing Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney, and now I am extra-amused, because his frilly cravat would fit right in in Camelot.

Of course, I then went on to play Phoenix Wright: Justice for All, and I had forgotten just how gay for each other they were. "I can see him like it was only yesterday... No, Phoenix! You mustn't think about that person! He's gone!"
