So Merlin, the TV show, opens like this:
IN A LAND OF MYTH AND A TIME OF MAGIC,
THE DESTINY OF A GREAT KINGDOM
RESTS ON THE SHOULDERS OF A YOUNG BOY.
HIS NAME...IS MERLIN.
It's spoken aloud very dramatically by John Hurt, who is the voice of the Slash Dragon who's always telling Merlin he and Arthur are destined to be together and other stuff. No, for real.
I laugh at this every time I watch Merlin, and I've finally figured out why I find it so funny other than that it is kind of funny. It's because I'm expecting it to go:
IN A LAND OF MYTH AND A TIME OF MAGIC
THE PEOPLE ARE REPRESENTED BY TWO SEPARATE BUT EQUALLY IMPORTANT GROUPS:
THE POLICE WHO INVESTIGATE CRIME
AND THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS WHO PROSECUTE THE OFFENDERS.
THESE ARE THEIR STORIES.
Followed by the Doink Doink. (Not to be confused with the Thing That Goes Doink.)
Given the massive preponderance of AUs in this fandom (not that I disapprove; I happen to be a connoisseur of AUs) I'm sure someone has written it. Or soon will.
The Thing That Goes Doink is the ultimate in tropebombing. Go on. You know you want to click.
