Good morning all, and welcome to Radio Free Monday! Now with 100% more air conditioning.
Ways To Give:
nerak_rose linked me to Cape To Cape, a website about Gijs Stevers's plan to bike from Nordkapp to the Cape of Good Hope to raise awareness about renewable energy. He's looking for sponsors, but also for people to ride with him and to host him along the way.
hedda62 linked to Michael Twitty's indiegogo page for The Cooking Gene Project, where he's trying to raise funds for a tour of the southern US. The Southern Discomfort Tour plans to document his attempt to track down information about his enslaved ancestors, as well as his talks and workshops about his research, and his cooking projects along the way.
Help For Free:
jonaht linked to an Allout page about the "Gay Gag Rule" in St. Petersburg, Russia, prohibiting any discussion or mention of homosexuality in media (including literature and music). Allout is asking people to sign a petition demanding the governor of St. Petersburg not to sign the law into effect, and to let St. Petersburg know that the law will materially damage their tourist industry.
Xandii linked me to a contest her college theatre program has entered to win a new light board. A group of students designed, directed, and filmed a four minute video and they need votes to win! Friday is the last day to vote, so I'm reposting the blurb on this one. Go, watch the fire-spinning, and click "like" to help Stephens College get a new lightboard!
News To Know:
jade_mushroom let me know that Dustin Lance Black's play "8", a reading of transcripts from the Prop 8 trial in California, has been aired and is available for viewing on YouTube. There are a lot of stars in this including (I believe; I've not watched the full thing) Matt Bomer, for you White Collar fans.
tzikeh has posted a tutorial on how to use Instapaper to convert fanfic on LJ and DW into Kindle, Nook, and other e-reader formats.
roseathome let me know that her publisher, Entangled, has job openings for editors, publicists, and cover artists. Entangled is a new startup but they're apparently doing very well, and they operate on a percentage system so that everyone involved with each book makes a cut of what it sells.
Just For Fun:
frogy linked to Nerdy Day Trips, an interactive map of day trips that people have gone on for various nerdy reasons.
banesidhe linked to Sex Degrees of Tony Stark. It could just be because I'm a dork for Tony Stark, but this was one of the funniest things I've seen all week.
And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). Remember, brevity is the soul of RFM.

Date: 2012-03-19 01:31 pm (UTC)This has been tickling the edge of my radar for the past couple of months. I haven't had the spoons to really dig into it, but it looks as if lawmakers are going to slide through legislation that would make protests like the Occupy movement into federal, felony crime. The bill is HR-347, and yes, I plan to go and search out the details, but if it is what it appears to be, then it'll need an enormous public outcry to stop it -- and that means a lot of people talking about it in public.
Cheers.

Date: 2012-03-19 11:31 pm (UTC)From what I can tell, it has been passed; the ACLU states clearly what the implications are (and how it could be misused).

Date: 2012-03-19 01:41 pm (UTC)The Illinois House Agriculture Committee (yes, you read that right,) has floated a bill to institute the same kind of mandatory invasive medical ultrasound that Texas just signed into law. The agriculture committee. Because women are livestock in Illinois, I guess? Anyway. Thought you'd like to know.

Date: 2012-03-19 03:16 pm (UTC)The cast list is pretty incredible, and does in fact include Matt Bomer. I've only watched the first few minutes of the play itself, but it looks like something good. [(What's your stance on downloads, Sam? Could I make the mp4 link of the entire play available here to people, or should they find it on their own?)]

Date: 2012-03-19 11:42 pm (UTC)For stuff spread over multiple pages I use either the GrabMyBooks firefox extension (http://www.grabmybooks.com/) or Read It Later as a news subscription on Calibre.
I do this for more than fic. If you're in the kind of situation where you need to be reading lots of academic articles it can be incredibly useful. Databases like Literature Online (LION) and Project MUSE often have articles available in html versions as well as pdf.

Date: 2012-03-20 12:19 am (UTC)Whether reading one woman's tale of personal horror http://www.texasobserver.org/cover-story/the-right-not-to-know or a laundry list of the intrusive laws cropping up across the country http://www.huffingtonpost.com/soraya-chemaly/womens-reproductive-rights_b_1345214.html it's clear there is a war on women.
A few ways to get involved, ranging from the serious, such as a coordinated march in all 50 states on 4/28 http://www.wearewomenmarch.net/ to "the feminist humor defense" http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/article/2012/03/15/project-tmi-feminist-humor-defense to the just plain fun (while still having a point) http://www.governmentfreevjj.com/

Also, if people need some fun "Yay Women!" stuff in all this bad news, there's also the Bad Romance: Women's Suffrage video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=IYQhRCs9IHM

Date: 2012-03-20 09:41 am (UTC)My extremely lovely friend is running FOUR charity races this year for a range of cancer related charities. She's been inspired by the 3 year old son of another friend of ours, who has been very recently diagnosed with leukaemia. Thanks to his mom's quick actions his prognosis is very good, but he's still got a long trawl ahead of him.
Please have a look at Becks' fundraising page and, if you can, donate to her good causes.

Date: 2012-03-21 02:14 pm (UTC)The survey is short - five radio-button qs gauging support for various aspects of the bills - but it also has two sections to explain your reasons for your responses and comment on the legal implications (limited to 250 words each). I figure if anywhere can be called upon to argue with their words for a good cause, it's Sam's Eloquent Legion.

Closing date for responses is April 20th.

Date: 2012-03-21 09:30 pm (UTC)The Wild Hunt is basically a pagan news journal. I get his stuff through rss on LJ, and he posted something today that may be of interest to those in the community. http://the-wildhunt.livejournal.com/866241.html or http://www.indiegogo.com/thewildhunt-AAR
He is looking to try and crowd fund him to go to religious studies/media conventions. He has really put himself out there and is starting to get pagan interests and journalism taken seriously, and I think that is a great thing. Hope this could work for RFM!
Thanks.
(edited to add the indiegogo link)
