Friday Fanfic reccs!

After I attended Wait Wait Don't Tell Me last week, [livejournal.com profile] ladyvyola linked me to a very amusing zombie parody, Wait Wait Don't Eat Me.

Lovers Of Mere Moments by heypeterpanda -- During the fight on the Helicarrier, Tony and Steve have a moment. It's essentially just a quick kiss during battle, but unlike most fics where they magically don't hate each other it's rational (for a given value). It comes from a kind of messed-up place with regards to Steve and his complicated relationship with the Stark family, and I love that. Teen and Up, Steve/Howard, Steve/Tony.

They Know by [livejournal.com profile] determamfidd -- After being forced into a brief telepathic bond during a fight, the Avengers freak out in a variety of ways. They solve this problem with an orgy. This sounds like a PWP, and certainly it is wall-to-wall everyone-fucks-everyone, BUT it's also a very interesting study of Bruce's relationship to the other Avengers and to the Hulk. It's sex but not just sex -- it's told from Bruce's POV and there's a lot to dig into within the story. NC-17, Everyone/Everyone, and warning for mindfuckery and description of trauma.

Finally, I know this is old but I just found it -- Scarlett Johanssen and Mark Ruffalo did a Vogue shoot in May, and there's a great behind-the-scenes video with lots of classic glamour (and a leopard).

I say again; you are seriously affecting my productivity.

On a very happy note (for me, at least!), after reading some of your White Collar entries, I went and rented all of Season 3 and watched them with my husband. We are both now hopelessly addicted. *shakes fist*

And so, while I'm idly contemplating purchasing S1 & S2, what pops up on one of my local channels last night but the pilot episode! SQUEE!

Now I have to figure out if & where their schedule is online, so I can make extra sure I don't miss any episodes!

There's an AO3 link to They Know; it is this. http://archiveofourown.org/works/524009

Thanks for posting the recs and that video. I got some bad news the other day and I really needed something of the kind.

Ah, thank you! Others have been crying out for a non-meme-structured version :)

Hope your bad news resolves itself!

It'll take a while, but it probably will resolve itself eventually.

And today I get to go to the farmer's market and get fresh bread and strange tropical fruit and yes, avocados! Beware buying avocados in Hawaii, Sam. The smallest ones I tend to find are half the size of my head. O.o

Y'know, I've been reading all your Avengers fic without having seen the movie (because of course I was a huge comic books fan back in high school, so I know the basic characters) but when I watched that video I A) got confused about which "Avengers" we were talking about, for a second, because I also used to watch the TV show about John Steed and Emma Peel, and then B) had absolutely no interest in listening to the audio or seeing these people being glamorous, since they obviously weren't John Steed and Emma Peel... but the leopard was so glorious and adorable at the same time that I watched the whole video wanting more glimpses of it. :D

Fair enough.

FYI, we just watched Iron Man 2 (literally, credits still spooling) and we liked it about five times more than the first film! So we are on board with the Iron Man 2 love. No idea what all the dislike is about.

It could have done with a bit more Tony covered in grease, but that is just an aesthetic thing, not a flaw. :D

From: [identity profile] copperbadge.livejournal.com
Aw, I'm glad you liked it!

I think a lot of people who dislike it do so because Tony is such a towering jackass for most of it, without really copping to the fact (I didn't the first time I saw it, so fair enough) that he's intentionally being a jackass because he's dying.

Is he really any worse of a jackass than he is in the first film, though? I though it was about on a par. And by the time he has the fight with Rhodey at the party, the audience already knows he's got very little time left. He has the "what would you do on your last ever birthday" talk with Natasha beforehand.

Appropriate icon is appropriate! Tony Stark meeting John Hart.... the fallout would be EPIC. And probably literally fallout.

Also, we're totally going to get around to watching Thor and Avengers today. (We don't have Cap or Hulk, so they'll have to wait for another time.)

It's kind of a shame that you can't read Even the Light is an Illusion, because there are some great parallels between Tony's journey in it and in Iron Man 2 that I want to blather on to someone else about, but I totally understand/respect hardcore DNWs.

As for general DNWs, I generally am not a fan of genderswap, but I read Ironsides because people were talking about it in comments here, and I have to say I really liked it. :)

Thor was... useful information to have, but I can't say I was that interested. It wasn't dreadful, but it wasn't captivating, either.

On the whole we liked Avengers. It was a bit of a different film to what I was expecting. (Fanon, and presumably comics canon, has them all shacking up together, and I was waiting for the Stark tower commune to emerge, and it never did. Oh, fandom.) I think I was expecting a bit more character development versus exploding things. A bit more snark from Tony, at the very least, but the only scenes where there's a real verbal battle going on is the scene where Bruce ends up grabbing Loki's spear thing. And I really missed the Pepper-and-Tony show, where they're talking all over each other. I love that, and I know it developed out of not really having a script in time for filming Iron Man, but they kept it for Iron Man 2, and it's one of my favourite things about the Iron Man films, because it's natural and unconventional, particularly for an American production. It's far more like the sort of thing you'd see on British tv. (Gwen and Rhys's amazing drop-down drag-out fight in Meat springs to mind.) And the only scenes you have with Pepper and Tony, they're all smiley and nice and not stressy, and it felt a bit pod-people. I mean, you get Pepper telling him to do his homework, but I kind of wish I was there for the fight about Tony flying into a dimensional portal with a nuke. Because it would have been epic, and the sex afterwards would have required, at the very least, a bedroom redecorate.

One interesting thing we had to say to each other after, while the credits were rolling, is that it would have been so damn easy for X-Men: First Class to be just like Avengers. The difference being that the higher-ups chose to focus on Charles and Erik as people, and their developing relationship, rather than making it heavily plot driven. And, because of that, it's not hard to see what Avengers could have been like had they chosen to focus more heavily on characters, rather than plot. It's what fandom and fanfic does really well - filling in the story and character blanks.

P.S. We have decided that everything should have Scarlett Johansson playing the Widow in it. She inhabits the character amazingly well, and it really isn't a downside that she's hot like a burning thing, and not in a vulnerable, eye-candy-for-men way, but in an empowered, kick-your-arse-into-next-week way. OMG. *fans self* And I liked her before it was cool, too. She's been off my radar for a few years, but she's back on it now. (Have you seen Ghost World? Thora Birch, Scarlett Johannson, Steve Buscemi? I have it on video.)

Thor's pretty flawed, yeah. We have a joke that every time Jane shows up, she kills the dramatic tension and they have to start all over :D

The Stark Tower commune is comics canon, but also Avengers movie canon if you look closely and squint a bit -- at the very end, when Tony and Pepper are in the half-wrecked tower, he's visible designing bedrooms for his teammates.

I would not mind ScarJo in every movie I watch. I'm sure there's a place for her. :D

I thought Ghost World was a terrible film -- which of the girls did she play, the artist who gets on the bus or the other one?

Coulson is such a troll in it, though! He's such a smug bastard. "I'm stealing all your stuff, and enjoying it! Have a nice day, losers!"

Oh, yeah, I figured that was what he was doing with the floorplans, but I only came to that conclusion because I'd read all the communal living fics. :D

LOL, I have to admit that I haven't seen it in a decade. I mentioned it because it was the film that I first saw Scarlett Johansson and Thora Birch where they weren't children, and were hot. :D (Thora Birch I knew from Hocus Pocus, Scarlett from The Horse Whisperer.) Scarlett played the girl who doesn't end up with Steve Buscemi. That's all I remember! I'm so shallow.

I don't like it even though I know he's intentionally being a jackass because, well, he takes it so far that it's hard to watch. I believe he would do that, I just find it much too hard to watch.

Hi! I have something for RFM:

I'm a grad student, and I'm trying to build a data set for use in a methodology class this semester. I'm interested in studying the relationship between sexual orientation, gender identity and public opinion, so I've created a brief survey here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WQ5HB8P . If any American citizens over 18 have 5 minutes to take the survey, it would really help me out! I will never be publishing any of the data collected (it's solely for educational purposes), and I don't collect any personally identifying information.

Thanks! I'm a cafe member that RFM has helped out before, but I'm anon atm since my academic email is attached to the survey :)
