Okay, first things first:

TORCHWOOD HEROES and Captain Torchwood! (Along with some other awesome stuff in the second link).

These were based on descriptions I did as a sort of bonus portion of my fic The Justice League Of Cardiff Is A Stupid Name. Jean drawed them for me and I heart her.

And she's right, Constable Cymru's costume is patently ridiculous, omg. LOL.

In other news, I'm fascinated by the divergence between my perceptions and the Cafe-in-general's as regards Charitable Getting. Not so much the content as the event -- I felt, and I anticipated you feeling, that putting away Valet to work on Charitable Getting was a failure. A bit of an egregious failure, actually, because Valet is a book I need to write on several levels: challenging, difficult, and concerned with themes that are rarely treated well in Scifi when they're addressed at all.

So I was actually rather startled by the general reaction, which was amusement that I got distracted from writing a book in order to write another book. That is, I admit, some truly productive procrastination, and it was a nice reality check to have people point it out to me. I said yesterday that sometimes saving the world has to wait on the repairman, which is something I should remember more often. I don't have to write every story that needs writing; I just have to write the ones that I'm capable of.

Which is not to say I don't have to write Valet, because I think I am capable of that. It's just that the guilt associated with Charitable Getting is considerably lessened by your reactions. Which is good, because writing a novel is damn hard work, and I shouldn't feel guilty for working that hard. :D

To conclude, I'm a bad person because I laughed so loud at this my boss came over to see what was going on.
So, I had to be the one to explain to R the concept of "furry" in its internet context. I don't remember why it was me, or what brought it on, but somehow it fell to me.

Anyway, that was back in November, and since then he has been fascinated with the idea. Not fascinated enough to look it up on his own or do any independent research; just fascinated enough to keep bringing it up in our conversations.

Which results in stuff like this, from early in December, when he asked if I could come over to watch Wheel. He's in white, I'm in green; you can see his name has been blurred out, and that blurred out bit in text is where he called me by my last name.

This is just more proof I couldn't have made R up if I tried.
SO!

I WENT TO SEE PRINCESS AND THE FROG TONIGHT.

And lo, it was awesome!

I haven't seen a real proper Disney film in years; the last one I think I saw was The Lion King. I miss 2-D animation, and this was a tour-de-force artistically speaking; gorgeous art, well-drawn characters, excellent backgrounds and a real feeling for early 20th-century style.

The story was charming, if pretty much the Disney Standard, and a little truncated in places (the villain's motivation gets rather short shrift, IMO, and some of the events at the end felt rushed; also, "My dream wouldn't be complete without you in it" was a bit, uh) but it really was a pleasure to see a well-executed story with gorgeous art. It does have the signature Disney "nightmares, I will have nightmares" moment, but one expects that. And the resolution of the Evangeline subplot was amazing.

The music is great, naturally, and ukeleles got a nice tip of the hat. They really are a rather underappreciated instrument.

The film is unmistakeably and unapologetically New Orleans, and while I feel a few moments were a bit over-the-top in using that trope, overall it had a really nice flavour to it. I'm sorry I didn't see it sooner, and not just because I have friends who worked on it. *grin*

Anyhow. More than worth a movie ticket and a big bucket of popcorn. :D
