I've left my thumbdrive at home today -- actually I looked around this morning and when I didn't see it assumed I'd put it in my bag, so I'm not sure where it is -- which is both good and bad.

On the good side, I'm able to install programs on my work computer now, when I wasn't on the last one, so the programs I've been running off the thumbdrive are now part of the hard drive thanks to necessity being the mother of getting off my ass and doing the work. On the bad side, I don't have my To Do list, some files I needed to send to someone, and the latest draft of Charitable Getting. All frustrating things to lack.

So I decided to navel-gaze about the Rulesverse for a while. )

Unrelated to any of that, [livejournal.com profile] chewipaka drew me a House Centipede Inna Box. LOL.
I don't normally take television viewing advice from the pages of Esquire magazine, but I ran across an article they did a while back on George Gently, and thought it was worth a look.

It's fun to watch, like Life On Mars and Dalziel and Pascoe smashed together. In 1964, George Gently is a high-ranking police detective angry with the corruption of the London Metropolitan Police and grieving his recently murdered wife. He goes north to settle one last case, hoping to catch his wife's murderer, where he makes an uneasy ally in young Detective Sergeant John Bacchus -- a brilliant name, btw -- who is the most delightful weasel I've seen on television in some time. He's essentially on the side of good, but he's such a twisty, sneaking, vengeful kind of good that it's really entertaining to watch him work. There's a scene near the end where he neatly wipes the smile off an enemy's face with a blatant lie, just because he can, and it's really genius to see.

I wouldn't say it's the earthshattering experience that Esquire billed it as, but it's definitely quality TV and if you like detective drama you could do far worse.

It's apparently based on a series of books, which I've not read, and I've only seen the pilot, but it's essentially a TV movie and stands well on its own. I'm definitely intrigued to see the rest. As a bonus, the pilot is directed by Euros Lyn, who did Children of Earth.

Anyhow. George Gently! This is my recommendation to you.
