Aug. 22nd, 2011

So, basically I don't remember this past weekend. Or most of Friday. I sense that rather than saying "I hope I had fun" I should just be grateful.

And now...RADIO FREE MONDAAAAAAY.

Interestingly, with RFM we've hit a sort of critical mass where, for the first time, a lot of this week's links were submitted to me by more than one person. I don't want to give off the vibe that it's some kind of contest, but while I want to thank you and encourage you to continue linking, I've devised an on-the-spot policy to credit the first person who sent in the link. Otherwise some of these would have five or six names attached. :D Thanks for understanding, everyone!

Ways To Give:

[personal profile] quinfirefrorefiddle has a classmate whose father's cancer has metastasized and they're having trouble paying his medical bills after covering bills for their own young daughter's cancer. They're taking donations for help.

[livejournal.com profile] imaginarycircus let me know that [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve is fundraising to send books and school supplies to Tanzania. I believe we featured this back when she was still trying to find ways to get them there (I hope we helped) so it's nice to see in the follow up that she's found a way. (You can also find the information here at Dreamwidth, thanks [personal profile] ineptshieldmaid!)

[personal profile] tealin has a friend whose family is walking in a fundraiser to help keep a youth suicide prevention center in Denver. They could use some sponsors!

[personal profile] without_me is participating in AIDS Walk LA, in memory of her friends Neil and Corey. Her employer is matching all donations received, so she's hoping to raise lots of funds. You can find more information here.

[personal profile] hooloovoo linked to Operation Sparkle Wedding, where a lesbian couple are selling goods and asking for word of mouth to help fund their (newly legal!) wedding.

[livejournal.com profile] capedcrusader92 is looking for temporary homes for two kitties in Iowa. The cats belong to a friend of hers who will be able to recover them in January, but until then they need a place to stay. They're both healthy, declawed, socialised indoor cats and their owner is willing to deliver them to their new temporary home and pay for food and litter if she can find them a place to stay. You can email capedcrusader92@gmail.com for more information.

Jobz!

[livejournal.com profile] snufflesdbear let me know that NoSitStay Pet Store is opening in Fort Mill, SC, in October, and is looking for experienced groomers.

[livejournal.com profile] happi_feet's father is still looking for an illustrator for his children's book, and now has more information, which you can find here.

[livejournal.com profile] priscellie reminds everyone that the Books for Boobs/Project Teddybear auctions are still going on (ending Weds and Thurs), so folks still have time to bid on signed books and bears and help fight breast cancer. You can check out the current offerings here.

News to Know:

[personal profile] shrewreader has posted some very interesting information for people who need help with Social Security and Disability benefits -- apparently your local congressperson can help! She's got all the info here.

[livejournal.com profile] dyingfire linked to a story about a bridal shop in New Jersey that refused service to a bride because she was getting (legally) married to another woman in New York, calling it an "illegal action". It's always good to know where not to spend your (usually considerable) wedding dollars, don't you think? (Check the second page for Here Comes The Bride's thoughts on whether nice Jewish girls should be gay, and the deserved penalties for being "different".)

[livejournal.com profile] ecaterin has been supplying me with links all week about Chad Love-Lieberman, a "pop artist" (not actually!) who has been stealing works from DeviantArt and selling them as his own work. I'm linking it for a couple of reasons; first, if you're an artist on DA, you may want to make sure he hasn't stolen yours. Second, it's fun to support artists fighting to get this guy spanked. Third, this dude is a douchey trainwreck and I can't look away. You can find a links roundup here (thanks [livejournal.com profile] starspiritgate!) and a slideshow here. if you are a DA artist I strongly suggest you check the slideshow to be sure your art has not been stolen. If your art has been stolen, a class action suit is being assembled which you may wish to be aware of. Ursula Vernon, as is her wont, is handling the whole thing with aplomb.

Just For Fun:

[livejournal.com profile] daizy2k2 links to an old classic, the Threadless Doctor Who Owls shirt, which has now been made into a cake.

[livejournal.com profile] leonie_alastair linked me to TINY TINY ORIGAMI.

The Chicago Architecture Foundation is arranging an amazing, massive event in October called "Openhouse Chicago" in which buildings of architectural note in Chicago will open their doors to the public. There are some stunning opportunities here, including a chance to get a glimpse inside the exclusive University Club and explore the machinery behind the Crown Fountain. If you're in or near Chicago, this is going to be awesome.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can always post items for my attention in comments here (or on any post) or email me at copperbadge at gmail dot com. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help. Remember, non-embedded links are love.
Coworker Crush: I read all of Imperial Bedrooms last night. You've ruined me.
Sam: I'm sorry, who owns these books?
Coworker Crush: What did you think of Glamorama?
Sam: Um. I'm...confused --
Coworker Crush: Oh my god it's awful, isn't it?
Sam: YES THANK YOU.

And then we nattered on for about ten minutes about Glamorama and how everyone from other books keeps showing up in different books and now I have to read American Psycho again, so it's fortunate I went out and bought it and how I might have printed out PG Wodehouse's American Psycho and stuck it in the back.

Coworker Crush: Okay, I need to go get some coffee. We're the biggest nerds.
Sam: Trust me, we're not even close to the biggest nerds. Marry me.

My plan to seduce her via the most graphically violent books of the late 20th century continues apace.

Mind you, the next person to tell me to ask her out gets a ding round the ear. I'm enjoying nerding out with her platonically, and also I'm waiting until we're not in a work situation where she has to walk past my desk ten times a day, because if I ask her out and she says no that's all the awkward. Potentially, if I ask her out and she says yes, that's even more all the awkward. Either way, my cowardice is justified!
