Jul. 10th, 2014

Last night AT&T disconnected my internet. They were supposed to disconnect it on the 21st. Not sure how they got "Wednesday the 9th" from "Monday the 21st" but since I called two minutes too late to speak to a reactivation specialist, they told me they'd have to make a new account if I wanted internet back.

So I've got no internet at home until the 19th of this month. Just, FYI. I may have said some very abusive things to the Customer Care team on twitter. They were a shitty ISP anyway.

But, the positive note in all this is, I won't be home for much of that time. I'm flying out to the east coast this afternoon, and I won't be back until Sunday evening. Then I'm moving on Thursday and Friday of next week, so really between now and then that's only four nights without internet. I can totally handle that. *jitters* Right?

Anyway, I'll try to post regularly from Boston but the best way to keep an eye on me is twitter or instagram, where my photos will be posted -- tumblr too, but tumblr also has my queue stuff so it clutters up a little more.

I'll say hi to the Sacred Cod and the Sargent murals for everyone.
I have achieved my hotel room!

I won't lie, I wandered nostalgically around Copley Square for a while first. I spent many a happy hour in the musty back rooms of the library last time I was here, and tomorrow I'm going over in the morning to see if I can't get a peep at the Sargent murals. they were being cleaned last time, and the time before that I was stunned by them but didn't know their history.

The hotel is very elderly and rather off the beaten path, but it's also very cheap and I won't be here much anyway. I did laugh when the front desk woman said there was no internet in the rooms. SOMEONE IS TESTING ME, I thought. But they provide Wifi in the "common areas" and apparently my room is quite common, since I get three bars. Not enough for streaming, but enough to suit my needs.

I have a secret love of hotel rooms.

I had forgotten how New England this town is, which sounds funny, but it's true. I got off the bus and just inhaled a faceful of Yankee. It never really made such an impact on me before, but back then I was coming from California, which has a less rigid culture than most places, I think. Coming to New England from Chicago, I couldn't help but think GOD DAMN I'M SO MIDWESTERN.

Not that I mind. The midwest has its charms. But it's really, really evident. When I was checking in, the woman looked at my Texas driver's license, peered at me, and then said, "Texas?"

"I'm actually coming from Chicago," I said, and understanding dawned.

I mean, it could be worse. I could be Texan. :D
